Finally got a model 27
I have been wanting an 8-3/8" 686 for along time now. I fell I to a deal to trade a 17-3 for this beauty instead. 27-2 with box. Unfired(for now!) With 8 -3/8 barrel. As close to mint as I have ever seen if not mint condition. N629xxx serial number. Pinned and recessed. Just wanted to share and maybe get a date of manufacture, or apprx value? Thanks.

Very nice. Looks like about 1979-80 production acccording to the Standard Catalog. I've never owned a long-tube 27 but my shooting buddy has a 5-screw 8 3/8 which I have shot. They are wonderful shooters. 27-2s are kind of all over the map as to value, depending on relative rarity and the barometric pressure. Ha. My semi-educated estimate would be in the $700-800 range, but I've seen them a little cheaper (not much lately, tho) and considerably more (asking prices, at least). Others more knowledgeable may be along to give you a better idea. Enjoy your new sixgun!

I recently (last 6 months) bought a nickel 27-2 with 8 3/8 barrel that was unfired and in the presentation case. I paid well north of $1000 off of GB for it. I might have overpaid a little bit for what I got, but not much and locally you can hardly find any model 27's for sale and they are usually priced in the stratosphere or all ragged out and still expensive. I'm happy to report that mine is no longer unfired ( ) and that is is really nice to shoot.
According to the 4th edition of the SCSW, the N600000 series of guns were shipped during the 1979-1980 time frame.
As to value, did you get it with box or presentation case and tools or just the pistol? Also, my long tom 27 has a serial of N639XXX, which is a little bit after yours, but my pistol came with the football cutout targets instead of speedloader targets like you have. And I don't know if they were installing the speedloader cutout targets when our pistols were manufactured. So I wonder if the original owner bought a set of speedloader cutout targets later on and installed them on your gun.
Needless of whether your gun was shipped with the speedloader targets or they were installed later, your gun in unfired condition would probably bring $1000 on GB or higher. Especially if you have the presentation case and tools and paperwork.
Here are a couple of pics of my nickel long tom for you to check out.

Both of you left out, in my opinion, the prettiest part of your revolvers. Especially on the long barrel, the top strap is a thing of beauty and amazement.
I recently purchased a 95% + example Model 27-2 for right at $900 including sales tax. It is blued and I would think a nickel example would be worth at least 20% more.
Here is a picture of mine of vintage 1979 and SN: 111652. It is hard to get the long barrel in one picture. LOL

I did get the box and tools. No presentation case. The original football grips were in the box with the gun, but I wasn't sure with set was original to it. Thanks for the information. Your Nicole 27 is a thing of beauty. 27s are hard to come by in my area as well, so I'm just happy to grab one up.

If you have the football targets in the box, then you have the original grips that came on it. And if I'm not mistaken, when our guns shipped (after 1975 or so) a presentation case was also included with the model 27 pistols. The original owner might have swapped it for the speedloader targets in the past, maybe. Anyways, you have one fine pistol that will give you a lifetime of shooting pleasure. As for a guesstimate on value, I would say your pistol with original grips, box and tools is worth $1k or higher. You will probably have folks that will say less, but it might be a regional thing or whatever. Shooter grade maybe, but not a pristine gun. Anyways, you never pay too much, but it is possible to buy one a little too early.

My s&w m27-2 is in excellent 99.99% condition. I have two m27-2 brothers one in nickel and one in blue both were $795 each a few years back. I'm eyeing a m27 - 2 8 3/8" nickel that's $1100. I'm seeing the n frames going for much more lately.
What happened to the cheap prices on the N Frames in 8 3/8" barrels lately? Not too long ago no one wanted them. They were cheap to buy.

Yep, welcome to my world, Bill. Prices on model 27's seem to have spiked quite a bit in the last year or so. Even the 8 3/8 barrel guns are going for high prices. I bought my long tom off GB and a 6" nickel 27-2 from here on the forums this year and both were well north of $1000. But also, both were unfired when I got them and had presentation cases in good condition too. Those 2 purchases completed my 27 collection out, having one of each common barrel length. I need to get around to making a group pic of them all together now.

You scored a really nice M27!
But as far as trading, I'd be hard pressed to part with a 17-3.

4d5, I wouldn't have traded the 17 if I didn't also have a 5 screw pre 17 in the stable. B9th with 6" barrels. That gun is one of my favorites for sure and will never be sold or traded.

Very very nice. I have two 27-2s. One is a 8 and 3/8 with presentation box and all the goodies, the other is a 5 inch with Smith cardboard box and all the goodies. Both are cherry indeed. Paid just north of 1k for each. I will never fire them and love to just look at them. For firing, I have a shooter grade M-28. My point is you will love your 27 as it is just one fantastic gun with all the history which is Smith and Wesson.
