Yet another 17-2 Estimated value and age?
I know, I know, no pictures = hard to say. But unfortunately, at the time, I had nothing to take pictures with. However, I ran across a 17-2 in a pawn shop (6" barrel) in fair condition. Typical holster wear and poor storage/maintenance and generally not loved by previous owner(s). There is not any pitting, but the bottom of the trigger guard and backstrap are "dry" and have a very thin layer of rust starting. It's been handled a lot and not wiped down at all. I'm guessing.
The pawn guy said it had been there a while and he was willing to deal some from the $669 sticker. I offered $400, because it's still tight and I know I can love it back to some degree of health.
He countered with "$500 is as low as I can go." I got his card and said "I'll think on it." Would I be nuts to offer $450 for a 17-2 in that condition? No T-T-T, but factory magnas looked original, and not beat up. I didn't check for a matching number, but would bet it's there.
Can't get it off my mind ............. am I nuts?

Doesn't sound nuts to me. $450 sounds fair, but I'm used to California prices. Good luck!

Without pictures it's hard;...... almost any non abused 17 should be worth north of $600 these days.......
$450 ..............worse case you're out $50 on a possible good shooter.....could have been someone's "tool/work/truck" gun......
w/o pictures "I" wouldn't say buy it sight unseen....... but might clean up and be a good deal for a shooter!!!!!!!

Hello KY. $500 makes me wince a bit, without in hand or pics.
Roll the dice for $450. If it is sound , good shooter.

Hard to say without pictures.
But for four and a half bills, it is likely a pretty good deal.

If you can get it for $500 OTD, and it is mechanically sound, the cosmetics are something I could probably live with or I could pretty easily touch up. I wouldn't probably go any more than $500 total investment.

If the $500 comes from the "gun fund" (disposable, if there is such a thing) go for it. If it is from "rice and beans money" $200 is too much. Joe

Just looking for a shooter, and didn't want a $1,000 gun either. I use most all of my guns as tools anyway. This one will likely hang on my hip with a 22 shotshell up to bat first. I wear something similar just about anytime I'm working outside this time of year, and they tend to get banged while getting on and of the tractor or mower, they get dusty and even wet sometimes. But they get loved and wiped down at the end of the day anytime that happens.
I'm guessing the bluing will be very thin, or gone in some places, once it's cleaned up. Hope it's still there and they'll hold it for me. It was about 2 hours from the house, on my way back from a job when I spotted it.
Thanks for your opinion everyone!

Lay $450 cash on the counter, my guess is he'll take it. It's a pawn shop, he probably has $150 in it.

I would do as Fricks suggested, lay $450 cash on the counter. He won't let you leave, especially if it's been sitting a while.
Or heck, lay out $425 and have the other $25 in your pocket.
He gave some poor sap who needed money almost nothing for it.

I went back and it was still there, or so I thought. Turns out he sold the one I handled and had yet another 17-2! This one has some minor damage to the stocks, but a bit more bluing, less holster wear and maybe more freckling. $500 is the rock bottom, so I put it on layaway. Serial is K553665. Is this somewhere around '63 or so?
This is a terrible photo I know. But I will get some better ones once she gets a loving bath after I get her home. I very rarely see these for sale around here. Hardly any older Smiths at all actually. So I'm not letting this one get away from me, even if I am paying full retail. I want it.

I had no idea a Model 17 was worth that much. A K-22 yes, but I thought the model 17's were not worth too much. I have a 17 no dash in perhaps 95% condition that I was thinking of trading off. Maybe I'd better keep it.

I'd pay $450, maybe even $500. I need one to take the shooting load off of my K-22.
Like you I want a shooter not a gun to not shoot.

I had K607xxx that shipped 4/65. I know of K5531xx that shipped 05/64. Yours could have shipped between those 2 dates but not necessarily. Hope that helps some.
Btw, I thinks that a pretty good snag for $500.

Heck, I would pay $450 or even the $500 for it. In my neck of the woods, you never see $500 S&W revolvers anywhere in shootable condition. Buy it and don't look back. 3-4 years from now it will be worth $50-$100 more than its worth today, providing you take care of it.
What are you waiting for???

These Model 17s and a Model 18 are some of my "most shot" revolvers - .22 LR = no recoil and great training for centerfire K-frames. Bought by me back in the day, but if I didn't have one or more, I'd still pay today's going prices. Worth their weight in gold, for sure, with no more being made and owners like me hanging on to ours!

This 17-2 came to me early July. It was a G.B. purchase, Buy it Now for $550. Very happy with the condition, and functions flawlessly. (1964 gun) Bob

I'm seeing a few here with smooth targets (beautiful ones too!). Did they ship 17's with those from S&W? I have a set or two of standard targets (dark and medium) to put on mine when I get it cleaned up, but those smooth targets look pretty sweet! I do have one set of those in a sorta blonde color I bought from a fellow member, but they are setting on my 66 right now.

I bought an 8 3/8" model and thought that I really should not have, until I handled it.
That long barrel was non- existent. It really was like I was holding a 4".
Other than carrying it, it is a keeper that will
Draw the max out of a .22.
