Default J Frame Mod 36

Hello all, I just picked up a very barely used S&W Mod 36 nickel plated. It has some finish color changes up near the top of the grips, but no turn line. I took it apart and cleaned it and it looked to have very little usage. My question regards dating it.

On the crane it has

Mod 36
51592
A8

Any ideas as to what exactly I have?

Thanks in advance

Well "Mod 36" is obviously the model number. The 51592 is the serial number most likely but could be an assembly number and A8 might be an inspectors mark, if I remember correctly.

Whats the serial number on the butt?

Nice looking J frame, did it come with the factory combats?

That's the way I got it, no box. I've got an inquiry out to S&W so I guess I have to be patient.

The serial number is on the butt! The 51592 is the "assembly number" and has no value for providing information on the gun. If this was the SN it would be too early for the gun to be marked Model 36, 1954-1955.

That was my concern. Need the serial number off of the butt.

Congratulations on owning one of the finest most popular small frame revolvers ever produced. At one time they were the choice back-up gun for uniformed and EDC for non-uniform police. The serial number is stamped into the bottom of the grip frame. Using the appropriate size screwdriver or tire tool carefully remove the grips/stocks then record that number. If you bought the gun from an FFL it will be on the receipt. Armed with that number, a lot of forum members can then provide the approximate ship date based on information from the latest catalog. For the nominal fee of $75.00 the S&W Collectors Assn can provide a letter detailing the configuration of the gun when shipped and the exact ship date. Hope this helps. hardcase60

Many thanks younggun22. I think I'm gonna head on over to altamont for custom grips, the ones on it now prevent the use of hks speedloaders.

Can't believe I found a 1981 nickel in such mint condition. This one I'll shoot LOL, my blued mod 36LS is too beautiful to shoot, and yes, I know, that shouldn't be a factor.

Here's a set of Altamont Rosewoods on my three LSs -- just for comparison's sake.

Cheers,

Bob

That is a square butt - and that big old letter N stamped on the side of he grip frame is confirmation that it is a factory nickle finish - if there was any doubt.
