Hey all, I had been wanting two guns since I was a kid. A J-frame revolver as it was the quintessential cop sidearm from a lot of tv shows and movies, and lever gun. Last year I got both. Lever guns aside, here is my model 36-1 - it came with a Herretts target grip on it, which I have since taken off and stored (I don't plan to put it back on, so if anyone wants it let me know)

I now have a standard (from Smith and wesson ) laminated "Duty grip" for the square stock j-frame. I love this little revolver! It's a pinned barrel 3" heavy barrel revolver.

It was owned I believe since new by a employee of the gun shop "The Gun Parlor" in Worcester MA, where I bought it.

It only has a minor scratch in the bluing on the barrel, and a little cylinder wear. Great shooter, and I have no plans of ever selling it.

The stocks are Herrett's Shooting Ace. I tried a pair and didn't like them.

Many, many years ago, I carried one of these in nickel. I think three inch revolvers are the best for K and J frames. Good catch!

I have one also -- original stocks, manufactured about 1978.

This 3" is easier to shoot accurately than most of my 2" J frames.

I remember reading a story than Smith started making the 36-1 with the heavy barrel as a carry gun for Women NYPD officers in the 1950's.

Not sure if that is true, or is one of those made-up Internet stories.

I read the same thing- actually, if I recall NYPD was issuing the 38 special to female cops for many years due to its ease to shoot, and low recoil. I had people warning me about the recoil on then, saying they were almost unmanageable- they must be wimps, because I feel like my Ruger LC9S has more perceived recoil than this does...

With my paltry accumulation of 2" - 4" S&W's, I do favor the 3" ones the most.

I'm wearing my 36-1 right now.I Put a set of wood Hogue grips on it and love how they feel. It sure is a lot lighter to tote than my mod 65.

They are just such handsome wheel guns- I like them more than a K frame or most others. I like the Ruger GP101's and the Smith 686's but I really like the blued finish and wood grips of a classic j-frame best. I was in Cabelas the other day buying another Mossberg 500 12 gauge (have 3 now) and I saw the "Classic" re-released j-frame with blued finish and wood grips, and I think it was $699 for a 1 7/8" round butt. Ouch. That's why I buy used. Many times people sell them because they have been sitting around and the action is sticky or something, so when they go to shoot them they malfunction- I have bought a couple really cheap like that and been able to fix all of them so far.

I love how worn that grip is!

Not wanting to hi-jack the thread but I have been wanting a 36 for some time and found one with a 3 inch barrel at a local pawn shop.

It is a RB (I believe but haven't taken the grip off to be sure) and is a bit more worn than the one that the OP posted.

Seems to be mechanically strong and the cylinder and barrel looked super clean. Was told that an older gentleman used it as a carry gun for years and is ill now so had sold off his firearms.

They told me I could get it for 350.00 and was curious if that is a decent price, not knowing what the OP paid for his.

I think that's an OK price -- even a good price.

I don't remember exactly, but I think I paid around $500 for mine -- and that was a few years ago. California dollars, though.

M36-1 I bought new in 1980. I carried On Duty mainly when I was "driving" a dispatch desk... office chair with arms was tough with a big gun.

Brass is 10 guage & lathe turned 8 guage for cannon.

Target trigger with serations polished off... for DA use. (Smoooth DA trigger was not available for J frames at that time.) Fitted at the service center in Springfield. Slicked up a little. Original trigger retained.
I rarely worked plain clothes but I was thinner then & could conceal under a sweater for a preppie look. Lt. actually asked me if I was armed, LOL! With target grips. Yeah!

Plus 1, fan of the Chief Special series. Never carried one, but have two, shown below. First, a so-called "Baby Chief", of slightly smaller frame dimensions & configuration than later iterations. A "pre 36" gun, c. 1953. Second, a 3" barrel & longer ejector rod (personal sweet spot on both counts) Model 36 of 1971-2 production era.

The 36-1 indicates any of several 3" barrel variations... both square & round butt.
This isn't a -1, it's just a plain model 36, no dash, originally sold in 1976. There isn't even a turn line.






(Yes, those are a commercial 10 guage brass case & a lathe turned 8 guage brass case for signal cannon... again. They seem to have snuck into the pictures I took that day.)

I paid $475 for mine- at $350 you better run back and buy it if the cylinder is tight, and trigger is crisp. Mine was a little sticky due to being stored for a long time, a little CLP fixed than and it's 100% reliable.

I love all the pics of the 36's and the stories behind them! Flagman, even got the banana grips on them too eh? that's old school! I love it!
