Unhappy ***Uh oh!!!*** 27-2 3.5" not such a steal after all!!!

**Hold the phone, looking at the grip frame more closely while putting on the new stag grips I see the "R-Bi" in a rectangular box factory refinish mark on the left side of the grip frame. I rethink me getting a great deal.
I got a decent deal, but not the killer one I and a few of you thought as well. My apologies, I should've removed the grips at the shop before I made the purchase. I still really like it, plan on shooting it but it may not last as long in the safe as I initially intended. Dang, should've checked.**

The refinish mark:

My range/store is having a 10% off sale this weekend so I thought I'd run by and grap some extra Wilson mags for my Baer 1911. As I was leaving I see a big deep blue revolver in the used case. Oh my, it's a 3.5" 27-2 with Smith combat grips, nothing else. Priced stupid low in my opinion. It was thoroughly inspected by the inhouse gunsmith, I've known him over 25 years and he just smiled when he saw me look at it. It had been out on the shelf for 3 days and he couldn't believe no one had grabbed it yet. There is the tiniest bit of wear at the muzzle on the right side, very hard to photograph. Once I find the appropriate grips I'll be selling off the combats.

I couldn't say "it's mine" fast enough. Now I've yet, in the past 48 years of gun buying/selling, to ever match the many of you that have found killer deals in your Smith purchases. Today I join those ranks .

Serial number is N120XX which I believe makes it 1973. Ok so I just joined Postimage so here are a couple quickie pics. The combat grips will shortly be on their way to a new owner and I have a set of Grashorn stags with medallions on the way. Just need to get my grubby mitts on the proper T-grip and I'm good to go. This gun screams stags to me.

As far as price, all I'll say is it came home with tax and $6 background fee for under $700!!!!!

I just received grips I ordered Monday from the incomparable Patrick Grashorn. I think these are just what was needed, they definitely fit my hand much better, feel free to compare for yourselves.

After (will redo under better lighting conditions later:

Thanks, also in all these years this is only the second 27 I've owned. The first was back in college (around '77) also used but it had the 5" barrel with Patridge front sight. Didn't keep it long as I traded it in on a 4" 66.

This one is sticking around!

There's a 3.5 inch 27-2 parts kit (everything but the frame) on GB for $799. Granted it's GB, but that should give you an idea of how good a deal you got.

What a score! Nice to know there are deals out there to be had if you're in the right place at the right time. Good karma finally came back around to you!

The 3 1/2" barrels are to the N frames what the 3" are to the K's in their appealing symmetry. A beauty!

I still can't get over scoring this beauty. Can't wait to get it out on the range after the 4th! Thanks to a good friend and forum member I hope to have the appropriate grips in the not too distant future.

Nice snag!

Wonder why the gunsmith didn't grab it...

Sell the grips for $300 and you're into it for $400. Doesn't get much better than that!

Jealous!!!

Hell of a deal!
Thanks for stating the ballpark figure you paid, which makes this a good thread.
A few folks here seem to get their feathers ruffled when asked what they paid. That is one of the most interesting aspects of a deal, imho.

That's a super great price on a $1500 gun. As suggested above, sell the grips. The only combats that Smith made that I really like are the ones for the K frame. I have a pair of N frame combats just like the ones on your new gun. They are in a drawer. I hate them. They don't look or feel right on any Smith I own, and I have a bunch of N frames.

Congrats on your revolver. I got one a last year for $600 OTD and thought I had a very good deal. I enjoy shooting it very much. However, mne is blued. Again, congrats and enjoy.

Ahahahahaha, thank you! As I said earlier I keep seeing posts by guys getting killer deals and hated them too! I couldn't understand why I never came across one. I wasn't looking so maybe that's the key?

The range/shop is geared much more towards the plastic fantastic and "tacticool" rifles and sbr guns (not that there's anything wrong with that) so just kind of the stars aligning and being there at the right time. I'm sure my credit card company is laughing as on Friday I paid off the outstanding balance lol.

As for the grips, regardless of frame size they've never felt good in my hands.

I carried one in my early years of Law Enforcement, however with a bad back and smaller hands I went to a Colt LW commander in 45 acp with a few upgrades. Still I believe it is the best looking N frame, especially as a registered magnum. Enjoy, you have a classic S&W that will never go out of style.

SWEEEeeeeeeet........ and at a really great price...............sell those grips and you've got yourself a $500 gun!!!!!!! The round butt to barrel proportions of the 3 1/2 half inch N frame and 3" K frame are perfect IMO.

Lusted after a 3 1/2 inch 27 for a decade or more......finally settled for a 4" 28 and after about a year began keeping my eyes open for a 4" 27.....found a nice shooter grade (90%+) 27-2 last year. Once you move up to an N-frame IMO the extra 1/2 inch of barrel is like the tail of a dog.....makes no real difference in size or weight. Then the folks here told me the 4" 27 is the least common barrel length...... Score!!!

Just got a set of Spegel Extended boot grips for my 4" 27 perfect looks and feel !!!!!

Around here that gun would go for 1,200 or so.

Deal of a lifetime, if you ask me.

WOW, someone really did just "fall off the Turnip Truck", the dealer who was foolish to sell a 2000 dollar collectable as a 700 dollar shooter. Color me bright green with envy.

Great piece! Also, very nice case of "wrong grips"

Scooter if you'd like to have it for $2000 it's yours! . Just kidding, around my area it would need the box, tools, original grips, not fired and special provenance to get that kind of money.

The crazy thing is that they have a Uberti Cimarron Arms Rooster Special SAA (its modeled after John Wayne's movie gun except with what's called an "antique" finish) for $899 lol. That one's been sitting for months. I've got one that's unfired I'd like to get
$450 for without the ugly plastic grips haha.

I think a set of high luster manga grips, maybe smooth, with a T-grip would look and feel just right on this one.

That is a great find, great looking revolver but I agree it would look better without the combats.

Beautiful find. Congratulations. May I ask what grips belong on the gun?
I am not a fan of the ones on there either. Dont like the feel of the N frame or the K frame combats from S&W. liquidated all of mine llong ago

That is truly an amazing deal. A big congratulations to you! I'd like to add a 27-2 to my collection but I just don't want to pay what it takes to get it done. Oh well, I do have two 3.5 inch pre 27s that will just have to satisfy me until my lucky day comes around.

I forgot to add that I can't wait to see your 27 dressed in appropriate stocks! I really dislike the SB Combats. They came on my Md 16 and they are now safely stored in the box and off the gun.

Depending on how it was ordered or offered either the magna or standard target grips would be correct for this one. I actually like the feel of the standard targets on 4" N frames. This one I'm not sure, possibly the magna with a t-grip. The search is one for grips to match the condition of the gun.

That's a wonderful gun, and a super deal!! That's my favorite barrel length for the 27 or pre 27, or even a RM, (which I've never had), and I'm with you, I would look for stocks that would have come with the gun.

Mine is a 27-2 as well, and it came with target stocks, but I find these a little large for my hands, so I kept them, but put ivory magnas with a Tyler T Grip on the gun. I like the way that that combination looks and feels.

Best Regards, Les

I have a pair of those same stocks I need to sell too (smile). I agree with you, change those stocks. Nice gun other wise. Congratulations on the acquisition.

Yours probably looked like a good match for GSP's RM.

Les, Just found a gorgeous set of Grashorn's stag grips with medallions. Now I need to find the t-grip. The last time I ordered one it took almost 2 months and I'm the impatient type .

Have a safe and Happy 4th! Steve

Look at / Get the BK grip adapter...... the double clip design is much better in my opinion. I've used the Tylor T-grip and have used several sets of the old Pachmyer T-grips

Wink

I looked at that one on Friday morning but had too many other pressing issues to address before the holiday.
You got a great deal and I'm glad one of "us" got it!
Way to go.

Yes, you did steal it. Go ahead and turn yourself in to the local law enforcement agency.

I'll hold the evidence until your trial.

I think a nice set of Indian Sanbar Stags, maybe a nice amber set would look the best. [that's what I have on mine and they look great]................................M*

It's ok for you, congrats. I don't go under 4" barrels. The 5", 5 1/2", 6", 6 1/2" barrels is my sweet spot.
