Model 49-38.special handgun
My mother bought a 38. Special Smith and Wesson and Iam trying to help her find the year. It's a model 49 with the #'s 55698 with the stamp G8 below the numbers. On the bottom on the handle it has the numbers j933383. The hammer is also concealed. Any help and information would be greatly appreciated fellow gun enthusiast

Sometime in 1982 is its DOB. Im sure someone will come along with a more accurate date.

Your mother's Model 49 is the steel frame Bodyguard revolver. The same gun with an alloy frame is the Model 38 Bodyguard Airweight.
J933383 is the serial number and it indicates the gun was made in 1982.
55698 is a parts tracking number and G8 is a fitter's mark. Neither of them really means anything now. They were used during the assembly process.

Welcome to the Forum. I own a Model 649-0 which is the stainless steel version of the Model 49. I enclosed a photo of my Model 649 comparing it to a Colt's Detective Special. If your Mom complains about recoil or hand pain from shooting her Model 49, she might like a set of Crimson Trace LG-405 laser grips as seen on my Model 638-1 in my second photo. These laser grips have a chamber along the back strap that compresses under recoil.

Looking to find the year of my Model 49
I just picked up a nickel model 49 bodyguard. Its a no dash with a pinned barrel Serial is J547302. Can someone give me a date of manufacture? Any help would be appreciated.

Mine is J907xxx -- about 1981.
J547xxx should be around 1977.
