How far would you drive for a model 27? I have a chance to pick up a fairly nice one with box and papers buts its a 6 hour drive each way, ouch!

I don't know the gentleman or the true condition of the pistol. A lot of peoples idea of "mint"( an alarm word for me BTW) is my idea of shooter grade. He won't ship without funding and I am not sending money to a stranger so its a FTF deal only. He is an older gentleman and not able to drive far. I have always wanted a 27 short barrel but I am on the fence

My opinion: It is worth the drive if the price is right. And you won't know until you get there.

As Paul said, take the wife along and enjoy the trip.

In Alaska, just about everything is far away, so maybe I don't see this the same as some of you flatlanders . . .

There's a good reason they call it the Gunshine state. A private sale REQUIRES nothing more than looking at the buyers drivers license to "ensure" they are a FL resident. NO background checks/bill of sale/records of any kind. Some old timers are adamant about NO PAPERWORK & it's a deal breaker for them. I like a bill of sale with buyer/sellers info, BUT will do a transaction without it (still staying 100% within the law) if I have to. RE: the drive, that's a long drive to get burned if he sells to someone else before you get there, or the condition does not pass muster. Are you able to drive 6 hours? My last private FTF buy was app 2-3 years ago, I forked over the $, he forked over the gun, NO PAPERWORK but he was a retired LEO from a precinct I knew & we knew the same people from there, as well as belonging to the same club & shooting steel challenge in the same group for a while. I hope nothing has changed. After as much due diligence & pics AS ABLE, you don't want to jinx the deal, I'd probly take the drive & take my chances for a gun I really wanted. Most worked out favorably, some didn't. "I never met a winner that didn't bet". Good luck.

I too would make the drive. My wife and I will sometimes go for a couple of days on the spur of the moment. If it's possible, I'd take my bride and stop for dinner. Good face time for a us.
And, a chance to purchase a firearm that might be a real fun one.

I would do it. You never know what adventure awaits on the road. My M. O. would be to motor right up to get the gun then see some sights on the way home. Maybe take some notes on the way north of any points of interest worth visiting on the way back.

I'm pretty sure the FFL requirement across State lines is a FED requirement, not just a state law. I live right across the river from Missouri, and no way I can buy a "handgun" without an FFL and take it home. Long guns is another story. One of the reasons I got a C&R FFL.

To me depends on the price, possibly discount the price your cost to drive that far, at least the gas. a 27-2 3 1/2" isn't that hard to find, but price is another matter.

Assuming the RT is about 600 miles, and the mileage rate is 53.5 cents per mile (from IRS allowance, which is actually conservative), your driving cost is over $320. Assuming you don't get into a traffic accident or breakdown en route. Plus the value of 12 hours of your life. Is the trip worth that much to you? It sure wouldn't be for me.

If you have the money for gas, and the time, then why not? I once drove from CT to the TC Custom Shop (Fox Ridge) in NH, 8 hours each way, just to pick out a Hawken Custom rifle with wood I liked. Took the wife, stayed at a B&B, and had a good time, with the added bonus of a nice new rifle, and a happy wife when I got home.

If I figured the overall cost of everywhere I drove, I would hardly ever leave the driveway. I buy my cars to use to get out and do the things I like. Figure 600 miles round trip, 25mpg., about $2.10 a gallon for gas = about $50 - 60 or so for gas. Worth it to me to get a gun I want, and to make sure Its in nice shape. I have driven much farther in my life for a lot less...

800 miles worth of gas vs. shipping costs.

I drove 4 hours to a gun show in Northern Va. not knowing if I would find what I was looking for (Pre-1982 nickel Model 10 or Model 18). Left at 5 AM to be there when it opened. Got a great buy on a pinned barrel Nickel model 10. Made the deal and back on the road by 10 AM.

It was worth it.

Show us the pictures of it when you get back. (You know you're gonna go.)

Yes, it IS illegal (Federal Felony) to buy or sell a handgun across a state line without going through an FFL. I live 25 miles from a state line and I well know the temptation of picking up a nice deal from an individual on the other side of the line. However, the risk of losing my gun rights FOREVER, not to mention going to Federal prison just kind of queers the deal for me. No way!

I don't care what state you live Fed law says for handguns you have to use a FFL in your state, you can't use a FFL in another state.

My vote is go for it I would drive across the state for a nice gun across the country iI it was a " grail" gun.

Those are two different points. Perhaps I read your comment incorrectly as making two different points as well. To clarify my statement(s), In state transaction between Missouri residents, legal. Transaction between Missouri resident and resident of another state, in any state including Missouri, must go through appropriate FFL's . . .

Yup, I'd probably have to pop a few stop signs with my new acquisition on the way back home.

I Live in Montana. Anything under 300 miles one way is considered a short drive. But, then here most roads have very little traffic and the speed limit on 2 lane is 70 and the interstate 80, very few Highway Patrolmen and those you do see are not going to stop you over an extra 5 mph. A 300 mph trip doesn't take 5 hours.

I am going to drive over 300 miles Sunday just to meet one of my brothers and some of my sisters for lunch. Thats it lunch and then back home another 325 miles

One last thing to consider is that a trip from south Florida to north Florida is pretty boring. Any of the major highways mostly go through farmland. While this may be exciting to a farmer. Not so much for anyone else. Seen an orange before? Seen a cow before? Seen a horse before? How about pastureland? Get the picture?

STRICTLY depends on the price! If it's no bargain, I would not drive that far (I am assuming it's about 600 miles round trip), but would consider shipping it to an FFL if the $$ makes sense. Add in wear and tear on the car, your time, gasoline, tolls etc. NOT worth it unless you are "stealing it"!

I drove from SF to Bakersfield TWICE to get a 696ND.

Seller was in LA, met me in Bakersfield.

In the formerly Great State of California, all sales are done through an FFL, 10 day background check, then release of firearm.

So I had to do it twice, once to do the paperwork, once to do the pick up. 9 hours each round trip.

Worth it!
