Question Help with What to Offer For a Model 29-2

I don't see alot of local sales for a Model 29. The handful I have seen at gunshows here are almost $2000 each for blue guns with long barrels.
Recently I came across a man selling a Model 29-2 in nickel, it is pinned and has a 4" barrel. It also has an S serial number, what look to be original service grips, and jeweled hammer and trigger. As for condition he said it functions perfectly and was barely used, the nickel has no chips or deep scratches though it does have light superficial marks on it.
He is asking $1400. I offered him $1000 but he said price is firm. I have been looking for about a year for a gun like this one but am unsure if his asking price is too high. This forum has never steered me wrong so I am asking your opinions. Any help welcomed.

I my area any 29-2, 61/2" or 83/8" in high condition is $1K, 4"
guns bring more. Shooters going for $800-$900, no box ect.
They aren't getting any cheaper either. Just check out the for
sale forum to give you a idea of prices. As described I would
buy myself for $k, and I don't like 4" or nickel guns.

If it were an original nickel 4" (no trigger surface modifications, original Target stocks, box and contents) it would be a $1400 gun, especially if it was early enough to have the Special Target stocks. Otherwise, a pass.

Agree with murphydog I think the seller is pricing he gun at all original collector grade price but it sounds like the gun is maybe a nice shooter grade I personally think 1000 is a fair offer but that said someone may give the 1400 for it .I have generaly paid a little more for some firearms than their actual value just because I wanted them but not 400 bucks more .

$1,000 seems like a fair offer since the stocks are replacements for the original target stocks and the jeweling of the hammer and trigger. Shooting a 44 Magnum with magnum loads using service type stocks can be an unpleasant experience. You will have to find a pair of oversize (target) stocks if you plan to shoot the revolver.

There is no shortage of sellers who don't understand condition, rarity, originality, etc, and are willing to sit on their inventory a while to learn that, so don't be too hasty in your search for what you want. Your offer seems reasonable, and there are many guns out there so be patient and let the seller wait for the customer who will give him $1,400 for non original grips, jeweled parts that lessen their collector value, no box, and less than perfect condition.

Thank you everyone. I was pretty sure my offer was at the high end already, and that $1400 is too much. It is just a bummer when you find a gun you really want and have been looking for only to find it just out of reach. The gunshows are of no help either where I live, almost all the guns there are priced $300 over.

I see nice original 29-2s with box sell on GB for $1400. Seller is not in the ballpark and is probably holding out for someone without the knowledge (aka a sucker).

Pull your offer, and let the seller make the next move. There is no dearth of 29-2's out there. You'll find one for your price. Good luck.

Look online, they are out there in your offer range or a little lower. Ask lots of questions and ask for detailed photos, review the seller's reputation and you should be good to go.

There are tons of lightly used 29-2s out there.

I would not go $1400 on one. $1000 yes, $1400, no.

Keep looking, they are out there.

Those first 3" guns, 29-3s from the mid 1980s, should all be part of the special order from Lew Horton. Really nice ones with correct wood combat grips tend to sell for $1200+ and of course S&W holster, box, etc drives that up even more. It's all downhill from there, one with some honest wear should be around $1k.

I don't think the later 29-4s and up command quite as much unless they are really rare variants.

What about a 3" 629-2 with original wood grips? That is another gun I was thinking about buying.

The 3" guns are all going to be pretty high in price.

The thing is, unless it is magnaported, it is going to be a handful shooting even factory Magnums.

Factory Magnum loads in a 4" gun will twist your wrist, I can't even imagine what they are like in a 3" gun.

However, you are onto something with the 629.

I had two, and I wish I had one of them back.

A 4" pre-lock 629 is a Great gun. They are not as pricey as a 29-2, but they are just as good. Trust me on that.

Well as for .44 mag, I have only shot a 6" Ruger Redhawk. That gun was a great shooter, didn't think the recoil was anything too noticeable. On the other hand I have also shot a 4" S&W 500.

Shoot a 329PD and everything else will feel bank vault heavy.

Waiting for the 500PD with alloy frame and Ti cylinder to arrive and provide physical therapists a steady volume of new patients
