anybody seen original combat J grips before?
Just found this pair of factory J frame sb combat grips yesterday in a gun shop.
I was wondering where or what model they belong to?
It's the first time I see original J frame combat grips and presume they must be from the '80's
Any ideas?

Nice set of grips. I'm going to guess these go on a J frame square butt but will await others for a more precise opinion.

J-Frame Square Butt Combat Grips
I don't know that those were actually ever offered from the factory on a new gun, I bought a new set in a blister pack somewhere around 1989? and have them on my Model 63-3.

D Brown's stock set is original, I think the ones in the first photo have been nicely shortened at the bottoms.

They are for the SB J Frame. I bought a pair for my wife's Smith back around 1982ish. She didn't like them. Still have them in my box of grips.

My 4" model 631 came new with the combat grips in 1991. I liked them so much that I put a set on my model 63. I don"t know what other J frames they may have been the original grips.

As murphydog says, appears that they have been altered. Here is a photo from a Smith & Wesson catalog from the mid-1980's. There is a "Handgun Accessory Chart" in the catalog that lists the Goncalo Alves Smooth Combat Stocks in Square and Round Butt for the Model 36 and 37, the Smooth Round Butt stocks for the Model 60 and 38, and the Smooth Square Butt for the Model 31. So it does appear that your stocks are from the 1980's and are Goncalo Alves. It is not clear whether they could be ordered on the gun, or just as an accessory, but I suspect the latter.
Also attached is a picture of the inside of one of those stocks, and you can see that the outline is different from yours, which appear to have been shortened.

Bastogne71,
You are correct, the 4" Model 631 did indeed come with Combat Grips from the factory. They were, however, Round Butt, not Square Butt. Here's some pics of my Model 631 which I purchased new with the original grips.

The target grips will fit square or round butt. Don't recall about the combat grips.

I believe the J Combats are frame specific. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I don't think so. The internal routing is the same as that found on square butt J target stocks, which is to say both the target and combat stocks for square butt J-frames will also work on round butt versions of the gun, but not the other way around.

Thanks -db-. I only have RB Combats to compare, but would love to find a set of SB Combats for a reasonable price.

I am a strong proponent of the K- and L-frame FGSC grips in both RB & SB form, but I've noticed a bit of variation in the J-frame version and NONE of them really seem to scale down as well as I would like. In order to be useful for the hand, they strike me as a little overwhelming for the gun. JMHO, YMMV, of course.

I think D Brown on this forum was the one who turned me on to this option. They may not be everybody's cup of tea but I love these on my 63 no-dash.
