Default Question

This gun got passed down to me from my father. I was discussing its history and how he had a life long career in law enforcement with my son and he asked what the value was today. It was the only question I couldn't answer so didn't know if anyone here could.
Thanks for your help.

3 inch J frame. Not sure if the finish is original. About $400 +/-

From what I can see, I'd say it's original finish. $400 would be my bottom dollar. Depending on where in the country it might be sold, top end might be as much as $550 - $600. It looks pretty clean.

Forgot to mention that. It does depend on where you live. Some guns go for more....or less.... money in certain states or areas

Not sure why anyone would think the finish is not original, but it's easy enough to check on the end sticker on the box. Look for a B or an N over FIN, as in finish. Hard to tell from here without extensive photos, but it looks like it's in great shape, and you have box and papers.

I'm not sure how many people are looking for 3" nickel Chiefs, but someone who is might pay $500 or possibly more for that one.

Welcome to the Forum. More info would help. If there is a label on the box end flap post a pic.

I am going to say that because of the less common barrel length, seemingly excellent condition (not great pic's though), Nickel finish, original box, papers, etc. more in the range of $600 + in my neck of the woods.

I agree with the $500 starting range with the original box, and up from there. But being Dad's gun, it's truly priceless. Thanks for sharing it!

Here in California that would be a $650 - $750 gun, particularly with that barrel length.

I love J frames. If I ran across this for $400 the bills would be smoking I'd pull them out so fast. From the pictures, I could see it bringing $500 easily

Welcome! I would guess it is stamped MOD 36-1 on the frame under the barrel with the cylinder out, denoting the 3" heavy barrel version of the Chiefs Special. Agree with the $500-550 value range, perhaps a little higher with the box and contents. Enjoy!

$500-$600 easy here in the great NW. 3" barrel, nickle finish, round butt - all of the less common features. Original box, at least some of the tools, original stocks, all in great condition. I wouldn't sell it for less than $600 where I live if it were mine.
