Default Why would a mod19 stubby be worth 1300?

Hay, two days ago I stop by a LGS and notice a nickel snub nose in the case. I looked at it, mod 19-3 looked unfired, with bone grips, I would rate it maybe 95%, no carry marks, maybe in a drawer? It was P&R did I say it looked unfired!!!! I looked at the price tag and it was 1300. I smirked and said somebody's been watching to much gun broker, the guy giggled. Did I miss something or did something miss me? I have 2 66's 2.5" so don't really need it.

If it came with $600 worth of ammo it might be worth that.

Mine wasn't nickel with bone grips, but I got mine last year for $349 from - of all places - Gander Mountain; I like my deal better.

It looked like it could use some mothers, but inside the frame and forcing cone was perfect, the cylinder recess looked unused.

I am starting to see pre-lock S&W revolvers escalate in prices. I think a lot of gun owners caught the Colt Python bug and think that pre-lock blue model 10 with 4" barrel and 90% finish they have is worth $1000. There are some examples of 100% with box and papers, of rare revolvers that are commanding and worth the asking price, but I do see many over priced guns sitting on the tables at gun shows and behind glass at LGS that aren't going anywhere any time soon. Hey someone may come along and buy that $1300 model 19, but unless it has a $650 rebate it won't be me.

Or maybe an uneducated consignment seller.

Example: One of my LGS has a Winchester Model 24, 12 gauge with 26" barrels. It's about 85% on the barrels and about 45-50% on the receiver as it is silver on the bottom and mostly silver on the right side. Seller told LGS he has seen Winchester SxS SG's sell for ten's of thousands of dollars and his is priced cheap at $3200.

I asked the LGS to call the seller and ask if he would accept $450, And yes, $450 is more than a fare price for that SG in that condition.

I could here the consignment seller laugh at my offer and say the lowest he would go is $3000.

I think the seller is confusing a Winchester Model 24 for a Winchester Model 21.

There is a reason that Win M24 has been in the rack for 3+ years.

Worth is determined by what an informed and willing seller will accept
and an informed and willing buyer will pay. The $1300 is purely
speculation. The actual worth will be determined by negotiation.

I have bought several guns a little over there value but they were guns I wanted then again I have picked up a couple of deals so it averages out but in tne case of the revolver you describe it would take a heck of a deal to reach the average . I would pass .

A seller can ASK anything they want to ask. It's real worth is determined by what someone will give for it.

When I sell a gun, I always start high. I can always come down, but I can't go up. If I get someone who jumps right on something, and doesn't quibble over the price, I always suspect I set the price too low.

Default WHY WOULD IT BE WORTH XXX$?

Cuz you never know when a buyer with more $ than sense will walk thru the LGS door, & that's exactly who they are waiting/hoping for & USUALLY aren't disappointed. In fact it may not be worth the asking price, that has nothing to do with what it could sell for. To a daddy warbucks who sees what he wants, & wants it NOW, a few hundred $ may not be an issue.

With all respect, $1,300.00 is not twice the going rate, for a high quality P&R version of a 2 1/2" nickel plated model 19. IMO $1,300 is $500.00 over current pricing for a HIGH condition gun.

I just paid $800.00 for close to new 2 1/2" nickel model 19-4. I may have over paid by $100.00 - $150.00, but I've got the revolver I wanted, and can spend my time enjoying it not searching for one.

Added: I was able to pick up me new revolver today, and it looks as nice or better than the photos the seller sent. I'm really a happy guy...

old bear,
Your new revolver looks superb! The color case hardening on the trigger is amazing from what I can see!

The bone grips may have set the original owner back $300. So go from there.

While I wouldn't pay that price (not the gun I love) I can also think about the expensive
steak dinners I've had and now what do I have to show for them?

The question is why wouldn't it be worth that. If someone wanted to pay that amount, it's worth it to that buyer. Gun forums loooove to debate why something is or isn't worth some amount, castigating auction buyers left and right, but it's only capitalism at work.

Exactly! I've done the same thing a number of times; I've also
done the opposite. If not a wash, it's great entertainment. If I were looking for a P&R, nickel 19 snubbie, I'd give up to $1K.

I also think about how many thousand I pay for a vehicle and what it's worth when I get rid of it. A few hundred extra for a gun I want is not a big deal and in 500 years I won't know the difference. Larry

Could the "bone" stocks possibly be ivory ?

Model 19 snubs make a great carry 357 mag.
But, 13 Bens is too high.
My 19 snub carry piece.

I bought a 19-4 nickel snub a few months back for $700, didn't hurt my wallet too much, as I got $600 of that money from the guy next to him (sold him my Ruger Redhawk).
Not unfired but in great condition.

I guess it really all comes down to just how bad was the nickel finish .
If the gun was 99% with the original box, $ 1,300 was a good price.
Id be a buyer at that price if the box and papers, tools were included .
A 2 1/2 " Pinned and recessed Nickel model 19 has everything going for it.
P&R......2 1/2" barrel...nickel..."looks unfired" ..
Again, it all comes down to the condition of the nickel finish as to weather this is an $ 800 gun or an $ 1,800 gun.
It's a very desirable collector piece that will increase in value .
We are not talking about a beat up blued model ten 4 inch here .
Bottom line, if I saw it in front of me and it truly was nice ..at $ 1,300 I'm going to own it , and be smiling on my way out the door .
Go find another comparable at anywhere close to that price ..

Lewis

No one has mentioned it but location also makes a difference, I didn't check where the OP is located but here in the PRK that gun at that price wouldn't last a day in a lgs

Hay, the location(if I told you I'd have to ---- you JUST JOKING)
Is central fl. And it was a 2.5", if it were 3" it would me mine!
I have a couple of 2.5" 66's and a 4" 19. So I'm not interested but any fellow members are pm me for the location. You guys are getting me thinking maybe I should go back and check it out and get some pics!

Most of the "how much is this one worth?" questions fall into a few categories.

1. Buy it right now; it's a steal and you'll never see another at that price (usually with comments about theft ).
2. It is right in the range of current values.
3. It is high but not so much that you should feel bad about paying the asking price, especially if it is only $100-200 or so over current sales prices.
4. It is so far above current selling prices that you would really want it badly, or have enough money so price is no object.

To me, a $1300 2.5" model 19 falls into category 4.

When I was in sales, the selling price was what the market would bear. Same way with all those pretty Smith & Wesson revolvers out there.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Upstate NY 19-4 2 1/2" nickel last Feb I paid $700. It was in very good condition, but needed some action work, and one extractor pin.

Sir, are you sure of that statement? Cuz if you are, I got a "C" note that says you are wrong.
