Model 13 with square butt and 3" barrel
Did S&W ever manufacture a square butt model 13 with a 3" barrel?

Never say never but according to the Model 13 write up in Edition 3 of the SCS&W the 3" barrel was a round butt and the 4" barrel was a square butt.

If you can, post a pic. Are you measuring from the front of the cylinder out to the end of the barrel?

A model 13 with a square butt and what appears to be a 3" barrel is currently for sale on gunbroker. That is why I asked the question.

I looked it up and don't have a clue. Maybe a re-barrel or a special order. Someone here may have some info.

There is one particular fellow on GB that has been buying 3" barrels and swapping them onto SB frames and claiming 'S&W factory custom special". Beware of these cobbled up guns, and be sure to ask for S&W letter on any so-called S&W Custom Shop specials

For quite a while now, only Round Butt hads been made. The grips convert round to square, if desired. I'd be lookng at the SN range to see where it falls.

...I just have this round butt 13-2 (recessed cylinder, but not pinned):
I do not recall ever seeing a SB 3" Model 13...

There were a bunch of square butt 3" model 10s made for Australia police, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a special run of M-13s SB guns made for some foreign country.

I was the one who bought this Model 13 from GunBroker the other day. I have a letter request submitted, but I already spoke to Roy Jinks on the phone about it and he confirmed that, yes, they did make some 3" barreled Model 13's with square butts, usually on special order. I'll try to remember to post the letter when I get it.

Congrats on your purchase; post pics when you can, and the letter when it arrives.
Who was the seller? (Now that the sale's over, you can post links to the original ad if that's easiest.)

If its the same one I have seen, I think he's from OKC, OK. He also charge's two to three times the guns worth. That's not the only junk he tries to sell. He's cobbled up some S&W Auto's too!!

I had a model 13 with a 3" barrel and square butt. I since traded it off. I'll see if I still may have a photo.

More on square butt Model 13 3"
I picked it up at the LGS this afternoon. Everybody in the shop not only loved it, one of the owners said he'd also owned a square butt Model 13 3" at one time. For the time being, I put original Smith K-frame stocks on it, but I am thinking about Pachmayrs.

Nice, I would stay with original stocks to keep the classic looks. Maybe ad a T-grip for more purchase if needed. Very nice pistol!

Pinned and recessed too, must be a 13-2? Nice find!

Yes, it is a 13-2, made in 1979.

Model 13 3"
I am still waiting for the letter, so will post it. Hopefully, it's not a chop job.
It's in nice shape, with some holster wear and minor scratches, but I'd call it about 95%. The backstrap is scratched up some. It's very tight and the bore and timing are perfect.

Pete66, doesn't look like a chop job due to SMITH & WESSON being centered on the barrel. If it letters a four inch someone simply had a 3 inch put on a square frame.

Model 13 3" with square butt
So I got the letter today from S&W and it was indeed ordered as a square butt, but I was a year off in the date of manufacture. Here's the letter and also a shot of it with a pair of grips from Thailand, if you hadn't come across them on ebay. Reasonable quality for the money ($50) and it took about ten days for them to get here. Very good feel.
