I am looking at a 27-2 six inch with cylinder and finish issues and incorrect stocks.......the seller is asking for 700 dollars but I think it is more in the range of 500-600 as a shooter. I have a set stocks that I can replace the fake ivory with but what do I do about the cylinder? I know it is not a 700 dollar gun but is it in the range I am thinking if all else is in good shape.....I have a pristine in the box 27-2 and was looking for one that I would not be hesitant to shoot.

Sounds expensive at $700. Lots of not so sought after 6" guns out there.

IMO, $700 sounds a little high for a 6" in the condition you described. As to what to do with it (cylinder), shoot the heck out of it.
Seriously though, you might try to clean/touch up the finish and enjoy it like it is.

My top dollar would be 500-550 max.

The issues in the photos would cause me to pass on the 27-2.

The seller has indicated room for negotiation.....so I just need to see how much room. I think I can get past the finish if the price is right......I know that there are other 27s out there but this one is in my neighborhood and so I like the idea of being able to see it and check the condition, etc. I have bought off of gunbroker and had guns shipped in but I am losing my interest in always engaging in distance buying.....so there is some value to me in having the gun local and being able to manhandle it as opposed to the virtual selection. And here in north Texas you would be surprised how few steel and wood smiths show up....now in Houston you find the deal all the time but not so much in the DFW area. Thanks for the input.

I see a $500 gun. Those Altamont faux ivories are about $35.

To OP, dont weaken. True, close to home but go less than $500.

Personally, having another 27, would not make me interested in securing the 1 pictured. Especially at top dollar. Sure wish I had a 27 period. Do have a nice, clean 28 no dash. (1960) It pretty much cured my 27 itch. Good luck on your decision! Bob

I'm not an expert but if mechanics are on, my top would likely be $550, depending how bad you want it. But since its a 6", I'd feel better at $500. If seller makes an issue of the grips, I'd tell him to keep them and sell me the gun for $500.

You made me laugh out loud with that one. We will see how badly he wants to sell it and those grips don't even look like they fit well on the gun......I don't have to have this gun, I have others that fill the .357 slot with a 586 and 19 along with the really nice 27-2. 500 dollars is my top of the mark and am even going to offer it to him in a phone call and if that is too low for him I may not even bother going to look at the gun......which is hard for me to do since the seller is only 15 minutes from me......

You know I watch prices some go up and some go down. It's condition, condition, condition first. A $500 price would be max. A $450/$475 price would be better, haggle offer him $425 show him the bad points.

Steelwool 0000 lightly the rough areas on the cylinder. Wash with rubbing alcohol then heat the cylinder with a hair dryer. Apply the cold bluing with a piece of 0000 lightly. Then oil it up. It will blend in the bluing. Repeat till the desired color is achieved.

If it's tight, I'd go $450-$500 and send it back to S&W to get nickled with a red post front sight and white inlay rear. Then those grips would even look good on it. Just thinking out loud.

Pass it up, there will be others down the line...
The six inch does not balance as good as the short barreled 27's anyway. Especially if you just want it for a range gun..

I always wanted a S&W 357 shooter,, and about a year ago I found a Model 681 with a 4" barrel at a LGS,,,
They wanted $475 + tax,, and they took $450 OTD.
The 681 is almost pristine,, I shoot it regularly,, LOTS of 38's,, it is fun.
I even bought the stuff to reload for the 681 (I only loaded 44 Mag pistol before)
I think shooters should be stainless,,,, JMHO.

If it is a gun you want, and you can agree on the price, buy it. If you find one you like better down the road, you will always be able to convert this one back to cash.

Condition and originality are paramount in a "Collectible" firearm,.... in a "Shooter" its more about price and mechanical function.

Personally would choose a perfect Model 28 over a rough Model 27 for the same price and clean Model 28's are in that price range.

If this was in a gun shop I would send in a buddy first to offer him $375. Just to set him up for the sting. Then you offer $425 and haggle to $475.

If the only issue is the finish, you mentioned an issue with the cylinder but I am not sure if the cylinder issue is just the finish, I would offer $500 and tell him that is your best offer.

This is provided that the only issues are Finish issues and everything checks out mechanically.

$500 for a mechanically sound model 27-2 that has some Finish wear is not a bad deal.

You have a set of grips, it can be re-finished for $350 or it can be left as is.

I wouldn't mind hardchroming a revolver like that and having it be my rangetime Revolver.

Don't go more than $500 though if you want it.

Well to me where i live...these can be found in good condition for 600 with no finish issues....if it were me...ask him his bottom line...at his asking price i would pass....the grips are not cheap to find and if the finish bothers u...that will not be cheap to fix either....me personally would want to be in it for less than 500 as with the grips and finish ....u need room for the repairs

In the "None of My Business" department you haven't mentioned if that slightly abused duck is up for adoption from an LGS or an individual. If it's from a private seller you win with no sales tax. You are already on the plus side with no shipping and FFL fees from not being an internet purchase, plus you do get to fondle it. My strategy is to arrange a meet, examine the gun, then make an offer. I always take a bore light and a small pry-bar (in case me wants to remove the stocks). It humors me when the seller immediately volunteers he's selling the gun because of financial issues. Then the fun begins....... Best of luck, hardcase60

I consider a S&W M27-2 in general one of the more desirable guns but the finish wear has to be reflected in price. In a private transaction I would go up to $525 and just use an express rust blue to fix the gun up, Belgian Blue blends in well on S&W.

No we remember the old used prices, times are a changing. About five years ago the prices were $695 for a excellent m28/6" blue, the m27-2 was $795 in excellent condition no box nada. That was considered high. But was it?

For a shooter I think anything under $500 is good. A little cold bluing done right you could have a nice shooter.

Well, thanks for all the feedback. I have not contacted the seller, it is a private sale so no tax, no paper work, but I intend to drop him a note right now to see about meeting me this afternoon. I honestly don't think he will come down but I am going to offer just under 500 bucks and see what he says. I think I could live with it the way that the finish is on the cylinder as long as there are no other issues. Like I said I have a perfect 27-2 and this would be just icing on the cake.......I will let you all know how it turns out.
