Default S.C.H.D stamped 10-6

I wasn't in the market for another revolver, but this one was too good a deal to pass up at the gun show last weekend. As stated in the title, it's a 10-6 4" HB SB that looks absolutely atrocious at first glance. There's freckling everywhere, bare metal in spots, but no major pits or dings. The PC Magnas are numbered to the gun, even though it obviously wore some other grips for a long time.
BUT, the action is a dream, the screws are unbuggered and the chambers and bore are in excellent shape.

My question is this... Any clue what the S.C.H.D. stamp could mean?

Thanks for looking.

That was my first suspicion, but the South Carolina Highway Patrol has been SCHP since before the 1970's, and the South Carolina State Highway Department (I called them) does road maintenance and doesn't have any armed employees ("Unless they armed with a backhoe," said Miss Laverne).

Bing came up with the SCHD district 7 Credit Union, but no definition of the letters or of district 7.

It is South Carolina Highway Department. The SCHD acted as purchasing agent for the SC highway patrol for a number of years. At some point in time, the SCHP started doing their own purchasing, and firearms after that time are marked SCHP. I do not know the exact date they assumed that duty, but it has been at least 20 years ago. I used to own an 870 Wingmaster police riot gun with the SCHD markings, and currently own a much newer 870 Police Magnum with the SCHP marking.

PS, I did some checking and the SCHP did not move from the highway dept. to the public safety dept. until 1993. So firearms purchased prior to 1993 used the SCHD marking. Post 1993 used the SCHP marking. Also, S&W model 10's were a standard issue weapon up until they adopted the model 65 .357 magnum.

I don't know what year your revolver is, but Wiki say's 10-6 is 62-77. So that does not match up with the SCHD timeline. According to the SC highway patrol's own web page, they were attached to the Highway Dept until 1953.

South Carolina Department of Public Safety

Just saw the above post, and it makes sense that the HD continued to act as HP agent since their historical account leaves the impression their back office was short-staffed.

Thanks, fellas, that clears it up nicely!

Bigwheelzip, It's a 1969ish, but I don't think that disagrees necessarily with Slufstuff's timeline. Here's the paragraph...

"In the beginning, the Patrol was a part of the Motor Vehicle Division under the SC Highway Department. As the Patrol grew in size and responsibility, it was deemed that the Patrol could function more efficiently as a separate division. In 1953 the Highway Patrol became its own division."

...which doesn't say anything about leaving the Highway Department, just separating from the Motor Vehicle Division to become the Highway Patrol Division (presumably, still under the SCHD) at that time. Thanks for finding that link!

Is it marked .38 special? Quite a few 10-6s were .357 Mag and so marked on the barrel. I once owned one for a short while. They were pre 13s so to speak.

I copied and resized the first picture and can just make out the last two words on the barrel:
"... Special CTG"
