I have an early 1970's vintage model 36 38 Special with 3" barrel.
I don't know how to order a holster for it. Will a holster made for a model 60 acommodate it. Apparently what I have is no longer made and I don't know if it's equivalent to model 60. Thanks

Go to eBay, enter 3 J frame holster and up will come one or more listings by h.c.leather for holsters he makes. The one for the M60 3 inch should fit your 36 3 inch just fine. I have several of these for J (a three inch model 60), K, and N frame guns and have been very pleased with them. Good luck.

Two considerations that haven't been mentioned . . . one is tapered vs heavy barrel profile and the other is fixed vs adjustable sights.

The 3" model 36 (as you describe yours) is a tapered barrel whereas the 3" model 36-1 is a heavy barrel. I see many more holsters made for the 3" 36-1 than I do for the 3" model 36. There are 3" model 60s but all that I am aware of are heavy barrel profiles. Formed holsters are generally made to fit one or the other.

Adjustable sights can also impact the holster fit . . . I presume your model 36 has fixed sights but many model 60 holsters are made for adjustable sights.

You can often find good used Bianchi Model 5 or Safariland holsters at gun shows.

Except the Model 36 is blue or nickel and Model 60 is stainless, the guns are the same.

However, Model 36-6 and Model 60's like the M-60-4, 60-10, etc. have full-lugged barrels and require different holsters.

I had mine made by El Paso Saddlery, their Model 2, about like the old Safariland M-29. Pay for the lined version. It's worth it.
