66-1 • 2.5" • great shooter/great deal
I have had 5 of these over a 35+ year time frame. I would buy one, sell it and buy another. Rinse and repeat!
After going several years without one I spotted this one on a trade table at our PHX SAR Show that always falls on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of every December. It has to be seen to be believed, and if you are into NFA toys it is Disneyland in Arizona!
On a table covered in esoteric heavy foreign machine gun parts was the 66 "hiding" off to the side next to a massive M2 pintle mount. Turns out one of the vendors was selling his personal revolver and was asking $375. For half a nano second I considered going to haggle mode but dug out the cash instead. This was 2011. This will now go to one of the two grandsons. I'll find something as good for the other one.
It will continue to go to the range with me now and then. I always shot these well.
Shipped: April 1981 (same year we were married)
I added the Altamont Classic Panel stocks - perfect fit & looks great +feels good in the hand.

Agree 100% max, my preferred round for nightstand duty is Federal .38 Spl. +P Nyclad 158 gr. HP. I pick up any boxes I can find at gun shows.

I’m lucky enough to have several 2 ½” and 3” round butt K frames, in blued, nickel, and Stainless. To my eye the blued and nickel finishes are the classic revolvers. But, my stainless revolvers don’t sit in the secure locker as the others do. As much as I hate to admit it, I’d get rid of the blue/ nickeled guns before the stainless ones.
Added: DRYHEAT, I paid a slug more for my 2 1/2" model 66-1 than you did, and I don't mind in the least..

I traded into my 66-5 2 1/2", and while it isn't a classic it is a 66. No lock ,but has the frame mounted firing pin. It is still one of my favorite carry revolvers. Just shot it the other day it was scary accurate at 10 yards with 38 spl hand loads. I can understand the love for the model 66.

My 66-2. Bought this March at gun show. Paid too much! At least I got $70 off of asking price. Wear is minimal. Came with rubbers. It now has Herrett Targets on it. They feel great in my hand. Sure is a nice shooting Smith! Bob

I love the hammer profile on these I must admit... All my snubs are either 1 7/8ths or 2 inches. But I think a 2.5" snub is probably the best snub barrel length as I bet it balances a tad better. I love the under lug on these 66's as well. The 66 with a 158grain lead soft cast semi-wad cutter in the +P variety would make for quite the thug stopper/popper. I looked for a pinned and recessed 66 like the OP's for almost a year and gave up on a local trader site. I went with an M-36 but I still want a M66. Nice score OP. I'm a little jealous! Your grandson will be proud and always remember you for it when you pass it down!

I keep looking for a nice Mod 66 and hope to stumble on one sometime. I carry a Mod 36 (1971) pretty much every day with Federal 110 gr Hydra-shock JHP rounds. Some of my "tacti" friends with their Glocks and Sig semi-autos give me a hard time for carrying an old "snubbie" but as I tell them, I would never want to stand in front of one. CT where I live has a 10 round mag limit and the odds of me getting into a gun fight are pretty remote. I do have a Sig P226 and M&P Shield in 9mm but I love Revolvers and have only two right now. But I keep poking around gun shops and pawn shops hoping to find a nice Mod 66 or Mod 19.

That is my favorite show of the year. I always try to take Friday off from work and spend the day looking at all the silencers, Thompsons, full autos and all the other cool stuff.
You did real good on the pricing on that beauty!!! Thanks for sharing.
In 2007, I was in one of the back buildings at that show and came across this little fire blower:
It was my first 2.5" Combat Magnum. I paid $350 for it and I was happy. It had been reblued (rather poorly), sported a "six barrel" carburetor, and the bluing was almost all gone on the cylinder - cold blued by the prior owner. Oh, and it came with a holster (I don't recall if it was the one in the photo). Sometime in the last 10 years, it made a trip to Nelson Fords, was treated to his trigger job magic and now has one of the smoothest S&W triggers you can imagine.
It goes with me any time I'm out in the desert, is surprisingly accurate, and puts on quite the fire show when I light of a few rounds of .357 at dusk.

I will be moving back to my home state of AZ next year, very excited to go to the gun shows there. Right now I live in a tiny town in Idaho and most of the gun shows here are slim pickings and overpriced. I have only seen two model 66s and one was very dirty and scratched with a $1000 tag and the other was in ok condition with a $1300 tag. Luckily I found mine at a pawn shop on the border for $700, it is not pinned and is a -2 but I snatched it up.

Just picked up a 66-2 on Gunbroker. I had an aversion to stainless but not anymore. I think I have to gather a few more.

I want a 2 1\2 really bad. To Live And Die in L.A. is one of my favorite movies. SS used to carry 2 1/2" 19's with Eagle grips.

You guys have some very nice/purdy snubs there. Some time ago I picked up a nice 66ND shorty for a price in the low 3's. A couple of years ago I added a -2. I am always on the look out, as most of us are, for the -1, just to fill the gap. Happy hunting guys.

It is at the fairgrounds and it is a Crossroads of the West show. I think it is Dec 1-3 this year...

I almost miss living in Arizona....almost, it was just too hot for me but I do remember the great gunshows and shops. Great get on the snub 66!!

I have alays enjoyed the 2 1/2 inch MD 19 & 66. I own several in all types, blue, nickle, & stainless.
This is my carry gin in a holster by member 05CarbonDRZ. I am spoiled by the holsters he makes. If my holster is not as nice as the gun, I feel underdressed.
My carry MD 66 is polished & ported. I know ported may not be for everyone but it works for me.
Even if concealed, I like a pretty gun & holster.
