.38 S&W CTG / Revolver Identification
I was recently given a .38 S&W CTG that belonged to my grandfather. I am trying to determine the approximate date of manufacture and any other information I can find about it.
I have attached several pictures in 1 pdf document. The number on the end of the handle is 104319.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
CBH

Welcome! It appears to be a .38 Regulation Police. You may see MOD 33-1 stamped on the frame under the barrel with the cylinder out. The serial number puts it into the early '60s but someone here may get you closer to a specific year. Hope this is helpful.

I can't add anything to what MurphyDog posted except to say that's a very nice revolver and a great momento of your grandfather. I hope it stays in the family that will appreciate its heritage.

.38 S&W CTG / Revolver Identification
Thank you for the help in confirming the model and time frame of manufacture on this S&W .38 revolver. With the cylinder open, I did find "MOD 33-1" stamped inside as you had predicted.
I also found some other markings. I'm curious if these additional markings give any additional clues to narrow the year of manufacture even closer. If anyone has any information on what may be indicated by the markings displayed in the attached photograph, please let me know.
The markings appear to be: "44391 A R . 4"
Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.
These numbers should be assembly numbers, that were used to keep the frame, cylinder, and barrel together for final assembly.
The official serial number will be stamped on the butt or your revolver.

Thank you for your reply. Interesting note regarding the assembly numbers. I learned something new today. The number on the butt is 104319. A previous post from "murphydog" noted that this number would put it in the early 60's. That seems reasonable, but since no one in the family seems to recall where and when my grandfather obtained the firearm, I was curious if anyone could date it specifically. But, early 60's might be as close as we can get.
Thank you to everyone for your help so far!
