Default Model 10-5 engraved "SQ" for San Quentin

Hey guys, new to the forum and to revolvers in general.

Hoping for some input on a specific revolver a guy is trying to sell me.

I don't have pics but hoping you can provide some feedback and hopefully some idea of value.

He wants to sell me a model 10-5 engraved with "SQ" on the side, for San Quentin. He claims to also have paperwork showing the sale from the dealer to the prison.

I don't know the exact condition but sounds like it'll be rather well used.

So, with that limited info...thoughts? I guess ultimately what I'm asking is whether the SQ engraving does anything for value/collectibility. He also has a CDC marked one but the SQ one caught my attention.

Thanks in advance

Buy the gun and not the story. Now if you can do some independent research or someone comes back on the Forum and with a matching picture, then OK maybe some provenance along with the sales receipt.

I recently bought a Model 10 no dash with law enforcement marking. The only way I was able to document it was a letter from the S&W Historian Mr. Jinks. The marking on the revolver were factory engraved. First I handled the revolver and checked to ensure it was mechanical sound and the condition of the finish and the stocks.

What was the length of the barrel? What was the mechanical condition of the revolver? What was the condition of the finish? Are the grips/stock original? The answer to these questions should dictate the price. What is he asking for the revolver?

CDC usually stands for California department of corrections so it is possible SQ is for San Quentin. The guns used for qualifying are very heavily used but the guns used for daily carry are not shot much.

dscampbell is absolutely correct!! Armory guns fall into those two basic categories. A sub category are those issued to ranking officers and investigators. Shot very little, like the daily carry weapons but perhaps maintained better. I like LE guns but buy carefully. A well used Model 10-5 is most likely going to have significant finish wear. Right there you have to decide if it something that can be lived with. A professional refinish will cost almost, if not more than the gun is worth. Plus won't add any value. As to collectable value that is a **** shoot. It would take finding a buyer in a very small niche of San Quentin memorabilia buffs to add any real money. If the gun is mechanically sound, even with any provenance pointing to the big house my top dollar for that gun depending on overall condition would be $400.00 and that's a stretch. By your own admission, a letter from Mr. Jinks is probably only going to take the gun as far as the distributor. IMHO, not worth the money. Just remember, all this information may only be worth exactly what you paid for it. We all love pics and enable those with more knowledge than me to provide better opinions. Good luck sir, hardcase60

A well worn Model 10 doesn't have too much value, maybe 250,so how much of premium does the dealer think the SQ adds to that?
