581 as nib value
I am looking at a 581 advertised as 100% as nib. It has a box and all the additional paperwork and tools that were current for that model. It lists for right at $1,600.00. Since not many show up on the sales pages I was wondering how to evaluate this price. Used 581's with no box are running about $700.00.

I think $1600 is "optimistic"; I see very few NIB examples but somewhere in high three figures sounds about right.

I thought it was asking a lot for the 581. Less than $1,000 would seem to be closer to value, but I thought there might be some additional value I couldn't find in the ref books or by scanning the for sale listings. Thanks.

I have a very high condition no dash 581. No box or tools, but if someone wanted to buy it for $1600, it would be gone. Is it worth that? No way. IMO, one of the best looking guns ever made by S&W, and a great shooter, to boot.

IF, you paid $1600.00 for it, what would you be accomplishing? Will the market value get there someday? Granted, if you want 1 that badly, go for it. Let us know how you make out. Bob

SCS&W 4th published last fall.......ANIB....$725.
Which sounds about right to me for one new in box with box and docs.......in this market..................I wouldn't go higher.

In the end, any gun is only worth what someone will pay for it. Regardless of all that, if it gives you "that special feeling" then buy it. I think I. An speak for us all when I say, there are more than a couple guns in my collection that I probably paid too much for, but...

Maybe I'm cheap but I think about half of that price. I used to run into similar type things back when I was collecting US WWII paratrooper items. Most of us had the time to ferret out what we needed at normal prices but some folk did not have the time but did money and would pay outrageous prices to get them.

As BAM-BAM posted $725 should be a fair price. As I have little impulse control, and want my goods Right Now, if I were in the market, I'd be willing to go $850.00.

$800 would be a top price for something like that here in CT.
I would also try to talk them down from that too.
$1600? No, the person who wrote that on the hang tag is smoking some serious doobies.

Conventional wisdom says $800 tops. I can agree to that so will continue looking to fill that empty spot in the safe. Thanks to all for your input.

I don't think there were all that many M581s made. At the time (probably still true) people wanted adjustable sights on a revolver, so ordered the M586 instead. So finding an M581 may be harder, in the condition you describe, much harder. Hence the high asking price. But they are out there. My guess is the guy will either lower his price or keep the gun for many years to come.

Following up on the 581 bidding. The current bid, not mine, has met the reserve price of $1,399.00. The bidding closes in 2 days. I doubt it goes any higher.

Wow. The high bidder wants it badly and cost is no object.

There is a subtle distinction between NIB and ANIB. New In Box means never before sold at retail. IE, you will be the first owner. ANIB means it was previously sold at retail, but you could never tell ... the seller is letting you know this in the spirit of full disclosure. Sort of a distinction without a difference.
Of course, exactly how truthful the seller is, how accurately he has graded the firearm, etc., may vary from one seller to another.
I got a laugh out of one seller who described his revolver "As New In Box, but no box, ... I have fired it a few times." So it was ANIB but no box and not new.
