Doc 44, 29 experts please help. Update with pic
I recently received this grail gun , a birth year (1963) 29-2 with a factory 5" barrel. I sent in for the letter , but the non relieved presentation stocks confuse me. They look like maybe they are rosewood. I always associate the non relieved targets to the 1955 or so time frame. I assume the 29 will letter to HH Harris, and I know many lettered with presentation ( smooth ) targets. Have you seen this type of non relieved target on a 1963 or later gun? Thanks in advance.
Here she is!

Very nice 29-2. I suspect the rosewood targets are a bit older than your revolver and probably date to the mid- to late 50s. By the time your revolver was shipped, smooth target stocks had the relieved area on the left panel (certainly by 59). Also, your 29-2 would have shipped in mahogany case. Very few 44 Magnums letter as being shipped with smooth stocks.

I just had it on a 27 box for the pic. I have a 6.5" from that time frame so I knew about the case. I think you told me once that it would have shipped in a 6.5" case ? I'll be on the lookout for another one.

I have a Pinto that shipped in January of 63.
It letters as being shipped with smooth Birdseye maple stocks.
The ones on it are unrelieved.
It was a special order gun.

And they are Birdseye maple , I assume? I think I'll wait for the letter before I do anything.

Many...you are looking for a mahogany case with a clamshell interior made for a 44 Magnum with a 6 1/2-inch barrel.

There seem to be so few of these and I wonder did S&W ever fit mahogany cases for the 5" guns?

S&W did not make presentation cases for 44 Magnums with a 5-inch barrel. These guns were shipped in cases made for 6 1/2-inch guns. A presentation case for 27-2s with a 5-inch barrel was used beginning in 1975.

29-1 with smooth presentation grips
I am not a 29 "expert" but I DO have a 29-1 8 3/8" that "letters" as shipped June 8, 1962 with presentation SMOOTH Goncalvo Alves target grips according to Roy. It has the accompanying "clamshell" presentation case.

The lighting in your photo makes it look like the stocks have the coke bottle shape? Do they? If so, even better. I don't know if they made smooth cokes, though.

I haven't examined it that well because I've been working but the grips do appear to have a coke profile.

Very nice gun. I would like to answer your question but you will have to ship it to me and I will have to shoot a few hundred rounds thru it before I can give you answers. Let me know if you need my FFL info. ;-)

Lowriderfxr,
Beautiful gun and stocks!
I agree completely with Doc44. Mid to late 50s coke presentation stocks, 2nd variety.
The earliest coke stocks 1st variety first show up in the very early 50s. Here's a pair to compare with yours. Besides the non-relief the pronounced coke bottle profile right side and flare at the butt are obvious. But also the long filler behind the trigger guard evident below. The maple was prevalent in the early years.
By the mid 50s the long filler is gone.

I've been looking for a decent 5" 29 for a while. Couldn't find one so I bought a "beater" 29-2 8 3/8 and made a 5" out of it. Rust blued it and put a Patridge on it. (My favorite).

Many...the photo below shows the correct accessories for your Model 29-2 (assuming it was shipped in 1963). Particularly, note the sight screwdriver and the brush attached to the cleaning rod. S231233 was shipped on March 7, 1963 to H. H. Harris. Click on the photo for a better look.

Thanks Jim, very kind of you. I hope one day I have something you need.
Thank you as well Bill. I've seen your 5" 29-2 and it has inspired me to seek a birth year 5" 29-2. In fact I was delivered the day after that one was shipped. The photo is a great reference.

Bills pic shows the two items you need - a Fluted Long Taper Blade SAT and a brass (NOT aluminum) core .44 cal mop. I can help with the correct SAT if you don't already have one in your stash....

Well once again, S&W shows its inconsistencies.
I have my dad's 29-1 purchased new by him. It has the correct SAT but the alum thread mop.
Has anyone else seen this anomaly Model 29s?
I have seen this with the I frames of the late 1950s/early 60s as well. Some brass, some alum on later shipped guns. Most likely due to a transition period?

Beautiful, and those were the days weren't they?
My recently purchased $1400 460V and $1600 627-5 V-Comp came in plastic boxes not much thicker than todays water bottles.

Jim...the mop with a brass threaded base was shipped with Model 29s at least through September 1976. I believe the one you have with your 29-1 is a replacement for the original. The photo below shows a Model 29-2 that was purchased new, by me in September 1976. Everything is original. In 1977, the base on both the mop and the brush was changed from brass to aluminum.

That is awesome to be able to own an original OP!
I have always wanted a 5" M29 to use as a field gun/all around .44 Magnum, so I had one built. This one started life as an 8 & 3/8ths" barrel 29-2. SDM fabricating did the work. It has a Classic/DX interchangeable front sight, action job, and the target trigger has been narrowed and polished glass smooth for fast DA work.
