Default New Guy Needs Help 66-1

Hey guys. I recently acquired a 66-1 and it's my first S&W revolver. It's a little rough and I'm trying to decide what I'm going to do with it. Any info or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on the 66! You need to give as much information on it as possible. I see no pictures. Evidently something went WRONG!
MORE than anything..........Welcome to the FORUM! Bob

Hi there, boy from the pic that one led a hard life! With that much pitting I would check the bore, check the mechanics, lube it up and shoot the snot out of it.

It's definitely rough, but I don't have much invested in it. Bore is great. I'll post a pic of bore later. Does the finish look original? Almost looks like paint or cerakote .

Rmy660r,

Welcome to the forum. Good job on the pics. In my limited experience I have not seen a stainless gun with that much pitting. If you had not posted a pic of the model number I would have certainly questioned that revolver being SS. Yes, SS can rust but darn that is a lot! In answer to your question, NO, that does NOT appear to be a factory finish nor does it appear to be a professional Cerakote. Yes, it looks like a rattle can silver paint job. hope this helps, hardcase60

It may have been sandblasted or glass bead blasted to give it that look.

Go shoot that 66 and don't worry about how it looks (I doubt that you could hurt it any more than what has already been done). I bet it shoot like a house afire!

It's definitely a truck gun if I keep it. I've got $250 invested in it. I Might get crazy and try to sand out some of the pitting.

If the bore is good and the mechanics are good I wouldn't touch it. Except to shoot. Frequently. You got your money's worth, so don't mess with it.

Default agree

I agree w/ most of the other posts here. Clean thoroughly, lube lightly, shoot 'till arm and hand are tired. That'll be a sweet shooter I'd imagine. Let us know how it is at the range.

Anything you try to do to the finish is going to make the gun look worse. Don't "sand" anything!!! Leave it alone, and just enjoy it as it is.

That is a great gun, as long as Bubba has not been inside and tuned it. I see someone has replaced the trigger (not a good sign).

I would be glad to take it off your hands if you have buyer's remorse.

The same Bubba that let it pit and corrode and then painted it? LOL. I'll take your guys advice and leave it be. Has anyone ever seen a ss gun that pitted? I didn't know stainless could do that

The model 66 is truly one of the top 5 Smith and Wesson Revolvers of all time, and is very desirable.

Yours has some pitting, but I like guns that have scars and freckles on them too.

$250 is a terrific deal on that.

And the best part is that you will never feel guilty about shooting it or carrying it.

I put 50 rounds of aluminum cased Blazer through gun on Saturday. it ain't pretty, but its a very good shooter. I'm still debating trying to get the gray paint off of it. I'm curious to see what's under there

Just shoot it. Whatever you do to it now price wise the value won't go up. I'm not much of a finish guy, I typically look at my guns through the rear sights but this could be a good candidate if you wanted to try a new finish. Personally when it comes to guns the only investment I make is in mags and ammo.

Bubba means someone who tried to modify the gun somehow but was too cheap to buy the proper tools and no knowledge of how to. Corrosion could have happened anywhere. There could have been a flood, a burst pipe, just neglect. ....not everyone treats guns as some cherished objects...... the first rifle I ever bought got pitted because I didn't know better and kept it in the garage.......a million reasons.
