Default Finally! Resolution complete!

As some of you know, I have been looking for a Jovino or Behlert custom big bore snubbie in 41 magnum for years (literally). I even had a WTB ad here on the forum. Well, a kind and thoughtful member brought an auction to my attention that contained a very unusual Model 58.

Now, some of you know about my affinity for the unloved beast that is the S&W Model 58, so this was very exciting.

Well, long story short, I won the auction, likely because very few people knew what this was, or were scared of a modified gun. It is to be delivered to my local FFL for transfer later today. I am almost sure that they will have some delay in getting it transferred to me. I won't see it in person until Tuesday.

I am loading up some fresh 210gr LSWC with sr4756 for a range session as soon as I get it home

Here is a pic from the auction:

Finally! Resolution complete!-20170707133653-3588-jpg

I think that it started life as a model 58 with a 4 inch barrel. It appears to have a shortened model 57 barrel on it now as there is a full lug cover. The stocks are atrocious (K frame magnas) and will be removed immediately and something more suitable will be installed....maybe a good job for Patrick Grashorn aka Executioner?

What do you guys think? I think that now I need to find a Jovino Effector in 41 mag next the S&W addiction never ends does it?

Updated in today's post....see below....

12-6-2017 Resolution offered by seller: As soon as I knew that we might have an issue, I emailed the seller. His reply was prompt, he offered a full refund, plus return shipping, and transfer costs. I added all of that up and it seemed like a large sum to return an incorrect, but functioning gun. I offered to accept the parts cost to return it to the 41 caliber, and they agreed.

So, the gun is staying with me and I have the parts paid for if I decide that it is wise to convert it back to 41 Mag. I will be testing some 44 special loads this weekend, and looking for some HD/SD 44 Mag loads to try as well.

I think that we are on the road to recovery

12-8 - Range report added in last post

12-15 - Seller's promised remedy arrived and we are good to go!

I think you are correct regarding the barrel swap, it's a beautiful snubby, that I should own it, and that you are very fortunate to have found it. That's what I think. LOL, hardcase60

WOW.......that is a beautiful hand full. I love both of my 58s and generally carry 210 LSWCs. I am too lazy to go out to my reloading room to look up my recipe for the loads but they work great for me. Enjoy.

I would look for some old Sambar Stags,The new Elk Stags don't do anything for me(just my opinion).Throw on a nice matte black Tyler T Grip and your Golden.

That's a very cool Gun! You know, you could go old school and wrap black electrical tape around the grip........

Very nice find. One of my biggest gun regrets was trading off my model 58. I think the grips give it a classic gangster look from the days before model numbers. However, I see the fitment at the back strap leaves a lot to be desired. I like it.

I am thinking really old skool - how about a cut-out piece of bicycle tire inner tube?

There is a really neat couple of old time heaters that White Coyote posted a while back, maybe one of those could be used for inspiration?

Yes, the current stocks are horrendous.....I think that they were from a K frame. I can not bring myself to cut up some nice N PC magnas, so I am thinking that Sambar Stag may be in order?

The LGS never called, so I stopped by before lunch and it was there waiting for me. Yay! The last hours of the work day slowly trickle by.....I just want to go home and run a few cylinders through this old 58.....I have a stash of 210 LSWC stoked with a healthy (but still sensible) dose of sr4756. I bet the old steel plate will be sore in the morning

Range report and new shoes coming soon

A 58 is on my short list, and I love snubbies, too.

You've got a winner.

I'm not fond of snubbies but in 41 mag I can change my mind right. That will be purdy with some stags on it. I found my m58 n frame very confortable to shoot in 41 mag. While my ruger snubbie 357 jumps around way more. It's all about the bigger n frame.

Default Range report

First thing, when I made it home last night, I pulled those horrible K-frame modified magnas off and put them aside. I checked a few pairs of stocks that I have lying about and could only make one set fit well enough to not irritate my delicate sensibilities Yes, they are Pachmayr, but they fit wonderfully, and it is the same model used by Jovino in his conversion.

On to the range report.

I had some home brew 215gr LSWC with 12.5gr sr4756 made up, so I used them. At 25 yards I was ringing the steel plate with almost every shot. The 12.5gr load was manageable, but seemed stiff in that short barrel. The recoil was pleasant compared to full-house 357 magnums through my 340sc. The front sight needs some bright color to help it stand out.....I am thinking white base coat with a fluorescent orange top coat?

In any case, I enjoyed the short session with the new 58. I am already making plans to upgrade the stocks (calling Executioner!) and making the sights easier for my aging eyes to see.

I may have to make up some bunny fart loads to make the introduction of this handful more enjoyable for my wife and guests.

And for leather? I have a dandy S.D. Myres floral carved for a 3.5" N frame, but it just doesn't suit this gun. I am thinking maybe smooth, heavily boned pancake would be just the ticket......maybe horsehide? What do you guys think?

Finally! Resolution complete!-img_20170809_165438370-jpg

I would have posted this last night after the range time, but I was so excited to shoot my new 58 that I went and left my laptop at work

Good luck finding a .41 Magnum snub made by Austin Behlert. I worked there in the 80's and remember .44's and .45's but no .41's. I had a Model 25 which received the full snub treatment but sadly sold it off long ago. It was a honey.

Capt,

There is another member here who owns a Behlert model 58. His is signed, so we know where it came from. His has a red ramp front sight that is much higher than mine and his has Magna-ports and is still the original barrel (although cut down to snub size).

Maybe he will post some of his photos here?

Your friend is a lucky guy. Nice stuff came out of that Union, New Jersey shop. Word is that Austin came up with the idea for the "Bobcat" cut down Colt Government Model and Browning Hi-Power. His Python action job was unbelievable. He has been gone for more that 20 years and I have lost touch with his son, Frank.

Thanks Charlie! My dad thinks that it should be my EDC, but it is a bit large for my daily mode of carry

I have a whole shoulder worth of leather in the closet just begging to be made into a tortilla style rig just for this gun....somehow it just doesn't feel right in a Mryes floral carved one

Love the new/old snubby, very cool conversion with the full lug barrel, nice catch. I just got my converted .41mag 28-2 back from Mark Hartshorne a couple of days ago. Great caliber for short barrels, plenty of whack without the sharp recoil you get with .357s. You've got yourself a great carry gun there.

I had one of Behlert's Bobcat 1911s and a chopped 25-2, of all the handguns that have passed through my hands those two are a couple of the few I miss.

Default 58

Scott, great acquisition! Best of both worlds, a 41 mag and a very well executed 58 snub. I Like everything about it, despurred hammer, shrouded barrel. As far as an EDC, I gotta ride with your dad on that one. Nearest thing I have to your mod'ed 58 is my snub 657, which I have carried on and off for years. Enjoy your's, be safe. Bill.

fisco - yup, she is a keeper. The auction photos betrayed the quality of the finish, so I must have gambled and won on that account. I have shot it and the action is buttery smooth, but the matte park'd front sight leaves a lot to be desired. I will likely coat the serrated ramp with a white base coat and then fluorescent orange as a top coat.

You want to come over and shoot a few cyls through her?

Thanks again

Bill, as you may know, I have been a 41 mag for more years than I can count (without taking off my shoes and socks ).

It is made to be a carry gun and it would please me to no end to carry it, but my daily travels require a certain attire and I just can't get away with a belt holster most weeks. I can slide on pocket carry in Levi's and 5.11 cargo pants. Since I never really found a comfortable way to carry IWB, I am stuck with pocket carry or OWB. The 58 is a bit big for pocket carry most days.

I will be trying some different approaches to the whole affair. I will post some results here when I get some results.

Take care.

Scott, I share your affinity for he 41 and he 58, carried a 58 as a duty gun for several years. And you are correct, they present a challenge for CC, particularly in hot climes. Bottom line, you have a winner in that "enhanced" 58, enjoy it. Bill.

Bill,

I don't know if I told you, but an old friend who has since passed really got my addiction to the 41 rolling about 20 years ago. Art Collins was a motorcycle officer in his younger days. He rode around with a pistol grip 12 gauge in a holster on the forks of his bike and a model 58 on his hip. I don't imagine that anyone gave him much trouble (or if they did, they only did it once ). In his retirement, Art started Collins Cartridge Co in Conroe, TX. He reloaded all my used brass and took good care of a budding 41 Mag addict. I still miss seeing him at gun shows, he had some really great stories.

Art and others have helped solidify my love affair with the round. The model 58 was an unseen ally until about 10 years ago when I discovered them. If I could get a 41 mag in a J frame size, I would carry that too

When he showed me his Model 41 conversion, I got the impression it was in the final stages of development and about ready to release for sale. I met his son at the same time and got the impression he was more into testing and competing than the actual gunmithing. Didn't Austin also have a son in law who did gunsmithing for/with him? Does anyone here know whether there is anything left of that old company? He had so many neat products and services, I hope somebody picked them up.

Default One step closer to pocket carry!

Well, I remember that I had a set of Eagle Secret Service stocks in N round, so I pulled the Pachmayr's off and viola! Almost ready for pocket carry. The 587 will drop right into the front pocket of my Levi's completely. Now all I need is to add the Tactical Bandana to help break up the shape and we will be good to go!

Here is s pic with the new shoes.

Did you ever find the SAPD 58 you were looking for a while back? I saw one last weekend in Tulsa. You could tell it had been to work.

Charlie,

I have not found a SAPD model 58 yet. I was all over Tulsa, but didn't see one with the SAPD marked under the cylinder window. We missed you at the SW Bunch BBQ bud!

It is called skateboard tape (a millennial thing maybe?) and it can be found here: Skateboard Grip Tape | Amazon.com

And I won't likely be putting any on a gun any time soon. I would rather find a good gunsmith to checker any surfaces that are too slick to maintain a firm grip. I really hate sticky tape around my hands

Default Great Revolver

SAFireman:
That sir, is a great looking gun! I started shooting, and loading the .41Mag. in 1964. I bought the first Mod. 57 that arrived in Columbus, Ohio, immediately started casting bullets, and reloading cartridges for it. The extremely versatile .41 Mag. has always been one of my favorite calibers. I never had the pleasure of owning a Mod. 28, let alone, a customized one such as yours. At 86, I had to give up shooting my several Mod. 57s some time ago, due to old age ailments, such as arthritis. I don't know what you are shooting in your snubby 28, but I would have to make an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon prior to a range session with it. I can't even imagine, firing a full house factory load, or one of my hot reloads, in it. Enjoy it.

Default Ummmmm.....a serious issue....

Well, I have been carrying this 58/7 for over a week now and decided to have a second range session. During the session, I was really unimpressed by the accuracy. Mind you, my other 58's are kin to lasers, they are great. I had written the poor groups off to aging eyes and matte grey sights. Well, it's not my eyes, and it's not the sights. I was setting the fired brass aside for reloading and noticed that it had swelled more than normal. I got out my handy dandy calipers and began measuring things. The cylinder throats were .424. Now this is an older caliper set and I am in no way a highly skilled machinist, so my measurements may be a bit off. To double check, I grabbed some loaded 44 Magnum rounds and they dropped right in! Then, just to satisfy my squirrel addled brain, I grabbed a 45 ACP and it would not drop in at all. OK - so I think that the 41 Magnum that I bought is actually a 44 Magnum

I will be emailing the seller to see what can be done. As cool of a snubby as it may be, I bid on, and bought a 41 Magnum.

Has this happened to anyone else here? The seller claims to be a fully staffed and qualified gunsmith, so they should have known right?

DANG!!!! Worst of luck. I would sure think that a quality gun shop would have noticed it. However, if they are busy and a lot in my area are, I can certainly see where it would have slipped past. The telling tale as to their qualification is how they handle the situation.
Best of luck to you. Certainly feel for you after all the elation you showed in previous posts. Huge let down

Bad luck, but I doubt you'll have much trouble selling it here after you range test it with .44 ammo.

If your a big 41 mag fan I understand your pain. But, if I pick up a gun marked as a model 58 I would assume it was a 41 mag. You yourself took it to the range and fired some 41 mags through it when you first got it and still didn't realize something was up until the 2nd trip.
So, I can understand how the gun shop goofed up assuming it was a 41 mag. Like stated I am sure if its a 44 mag and you don't want to keep it you can easily turn it over. Fixed sight 44 mags are pretty hard to find.

But, I do agree that if you wish to get your money back and negate the deal, you should be with in your right to do so. As much as I understand how it happened, they advertised it as a 41 and thats what you wanted. The shop shouldn't have any problems selling it as a 44 in any case. As much as some guys like 41 mags there are far more 44 fans.

Yeah, the search begins anew....I am pretty bummed. I was really enjoying this one.

I only have about 12 rounds of 44 Mag laying around, and those are Black Talons that a buddy gave me years ago (back when I didn't even own any 44's, special or Mag)

Yup, sometimes I am a slow learner. The rounds were not swimming in the chambers like I thought that they would in a 44. I actually had to go drag out my 44 Mag Mountain gun to see if they looked the same in it (they do). I have years of shooting under the belt and did not catch it on the first go, fortunately, there were no problems.

I am on the fence about keeping it. I really had my heart set on a 41 Mag and finding this was actually was a 44 left me lost and somewhat upset. I own several pre-war 44 specials (and they are really neat guns) and two modern 44 Mags (that I hardly ever shoot or carry). I had a fleeting though about tracking down a 41 Mag cylinder and then having the barrel re-lined, but that seems excessive for what I want.

My dad was first in line if I decided to sell as he is big into Jovino's and Behlert's snubby conversions (I may have enabled him a bit in those regards). I am sure that there are several 44 Mag devotees that would jump on the chance for one like this.

I have about 50 or so re-loaded 44 specials in the range box. They are 240gr LSWC with a healthy dose of sr4756 under them. Maybe I can break away from watching baby James long enough to test them out. Who knows? maybe I will fall in love all over again with the 44

Thanks for all of the kind and supportive words guys. I'll make it through this, but I will still be a 41 Mag hound

Try a 250g SWC over 6.5g W231/HP38 in a Spl case, or 7g in a 44 mag case.

Sweet shooting, hard hitting, accurate.

Might be the load makes you keep it.

Before firing it again slug the barrel.

I had a 45acp built on a Model 57-0 frame,Model of 1955 barrel cut to 3 1/2"and way oversized reamed cylinder large C/B gap and badly headspaced.

Inside were more surprises.

A real frankenstein it was and it shot terribly

Years ago, when I first started my store, I wanted an inexpensive 12 ga. pump shot gun to keep on the premises. I really didn't care what brand it was - Winchester, Stevens or Sears - as long as it worked and was cheap. I bought one from a pawnshop that said "12 ga." on the tag and brought it back to the shop. As I was taking the tag off and looking at it, I realized it said "16 ga." on the barrel. Oops.

Hey, it happens. Took it back and traded it in on an old 12 ga. I know that's not something you can do easily when looking for a .41 snubbie. Keep looking - I'm confident it'll work out. Best wishes.

BTW, have you (or anyone else) heard that Charter Arms is coming out with a .41 Mag snubbie? CA had it at a gun symposium that Jeff at GunBlast was covering. Haven't seen it anywhere else, though.
