Looks to be a K-38, probably a 14-3. With the box around $700 give or take depending on condition.

K-38 Target Masterpiece (pre model 14) From the number, approx. 1949.
Value:
From the 1 pic.---- $350 to whatever someone is willing to pay. Depends on actual condition and how bad the buyer wants the gun also price will vary by the part of the country you are selling in. IE: price will be higher in places that have draconian gun laws(East coast, West coast, Chicago ect)

Check the auction sites for comparable guns and sales.

HTH

After looking at the picture again and re-reading Jackcpat's post: If the S.number is correct as given. The grips are much later than would have possibly come with the gun and the target hammer is probably a replacement. From the picture it does look like a later gun(70s or 80s). DonnyB. is it possible that there is a number before the K in the S.number? or a model# on the frame in the yoke area?

Having Re-reread the thread. I have come to the conclusion that, I misread the serial number, in my initial post. I read it as a 5 digit number and not what it really is, a 6 digit number. (probably not enough caffeine) The grips. are indeed, correct for a 1968 gun. I was full of buffalo bagels. (I will move on now, with my life and see what other thread I can screw up ) GB

I 'll have to agree with above on the date, I was looking at an early K-38 and not a 14-3 by mistake.

Welcome to the FORUM! Somebody will be able to get you much more information on it. Extra pictures would help. They are normally very good shooting guns. I have a -3 from 1977. It is a great shooting Smith! Bob

This amazes me!!! How so many could interpret the same gun/SN so differently! Per SCSW the SN is from 1968, has to be a 14-3, not probably. And why does anyone believe the stocks are not proper? 1968 is the year the "diamond" was deleted. They could be either perfectly correct, and original to the gun, or could be later. Absolutely no way to tell.

Nice revolver BTW.

Yep, serial number puts it in 1968. It probably is a 1968 gun as the Model 14 began the "D" prefix on its serial number in 1968. Looks like "football" target stocks - very sought after.

So a Model 14-3 produced in 1968 with target stocks and possible a target hammer. Very nice revolver and I'm sure a good shooter. Check the auction sites.

That's what I got from the 3rd edition of the SCS&W. Now I just bought an Model 14-3 in early July for $450 off of an auction site. S/N K876xxx and it shipped in 1969.

GB ... There is no number prior to the K in the s.number. There are no other markings indicating a model no.

I am somewhat amazed at the swift, cooperative and knowledgable responses. So glad I found this forum.

Targets Guy ... your photo is "my" gun. Nice. Good value. Thanks.
A dear friend's widow gave me this. I am trying to pay her. $450. OK.

Yes. I was the only bidder on the Model 14-3 above that I won on the auction site.

$450 would be fair.
A nice gun with a little wear, in a world with a dwindling number of folks interested in .38 revolvers.

Default Amazing Forum ... thanks, all.

My first "hand gun" - life-long shotgunner ... lately pig and elk ( w/ 30-06 ). Eager to get to a range and learn what I don't know. My wife ( yes ) is willing to learn to shoot this baby. Security at home. Will post my rookie findings. The widow who passed it to me will be grateful at the value. Thanks Target Guy. Cheers!

My wife loves shooting the 6" barreled K38/Model 14. I was really surprised by it but she just took to it. Hope your wife has the same enjoyment.

Price wise these have been sneeking up lately when we're not looking.
Check the guns for sale sights too so you can average out the price range.
