29-2 spitting gunpowder and little jacket pieces: a tale of two guns
Have had 2 29-2's for a long time. One sn S284xxx and twin sister sn N121xxx. Every so often N121xxx acts up and spits some gunpowder and/or little jacket pieces. S284xxx never does this. The problem does not appear to be related to a specific charge hole and is present in DA and SA. Both have been well treated and dont show any signs of lockup problem, index problems, bolt problems, timing problems or push off problems. My homework is done and I think I know the answer is some work on the forcing cone profile for older N-series sn barrels. This is mentioned more than once in the forums. My questions are these.
- Can I somehow detect whether the forcing cone really is the problem myself? If so please do let me know how.
- Does anyone here have any recent experience sending 29-2 back to S&W for diagnosis/repair? If so what was your experience?
- In lieu of sending it back to factory, does anyone recommend a good, quality S&W armorer in CA central valley who is able to diagnose/repair? I'm willing to drive a bit if so (bay area or toward LA if needed).
TIA for any helpful responses!

Sent back to SAW
I sent my 29-2 back to S&W and it was easy to do. The work was great and like wise for the service. Time was about 3 weeks.

The forcing cone works okay on five chambers? I'd say the cylinder throat on one chamber is at fault.

I had similar problems with my .41 magnum. I was shooting commercial reloads with TMJ bullets. Turned out that bullets were rated for about 1100 fps and the cases were overloaded, pushing the bullets way too fast. The jacketing was disintegrating as it entered the forcing cone. Cone and cylinder were perfectly aligned.
No problem with new commercial cartridges.

How's the spur and hand look were it turns the cylinder is one spur worn more then the other five? I lube the hand and spur on all my revolvers. I'm sure no one else does.
I got duped once and it was my fault I didn't look close enough at the revolvers cylinder. One slot in the cylinder was off and she was shaving the 22lr lead. I took out some flat punches and flat stock and seen which way the slot needed to move to line up the cylinder to the bore. It was a cheap h&r 22 revolver. I moved the slot and closed it up to where it should be. She's fine now. You can carefully move and roll material without damaging the steel carefully. Live and learn I look closely at used guns now. This online dealer had a bad rep anyway. Since he is local I should of knew better.

Don't know. I've never checked nor lubed them either.

Look at #5 in this linked article on how to check revolvers before buying. It relates to this thread.
Naturally you can't do this when buying online so a 3 day inspection period should be arranged with a seller.
Revolver checkout: how to tell if a particular specimen is any good

So you checked the B-C gap & it's end shake & they're okay too? These & alignment are what I'd look at first.
My 29-2's FC is rough & has a shallow angle but it's never been a problem & hadn't heard of that as being a common problem on them.
How does your FC look?
I'd check the FC's minimum diameter first using a new .429" JHP bullet first. See if the bullet's base easily enters the FC.
Next I'd check it's maximum diameter with a sized 44 Mag case, ~.448", to see if it just enters the FC opening.
If the FC looks rough, shallow cut & bends in aburpty you could have the FC re-cut & lapped to see if that helps, if everything else checks out okay.

Thanks, Bluedot. Took me a while to dig out my feeler gauges, and acquire an unfired JHP. Bullet and case check were ok. FC actually looks exactly like the other one. Endshake is miniscule, exactly like the other 29-2. Cylinder gap exactly the same on both at ~.009. Charge holes all check out and line up OK. Might just chalk this up to the reloads someone else mentioned. Will start shooting factory loads exclusively and see if it recurs.

Thanks, Shootist. Going to follow this advice and see if problem recurs.
