Default Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson - Rookie Questions

Hi,

I was going to tell my Wife that I'd love to have a copy of SCSW for Christmas. But then I realized I'm not really up to date on this resource. Can someone please tell me what the latest edition is and when it was released? Likewise, how many updates have there been, or are we expecting an updated edition again in the near future.

Thanks!
Eric

Volume 4 is the current edition.
About 8-10 months old. A volume 5 waaaay to early to tell.
Its a big undertaking and the authors aren't getting any younger.

Barnes & Noble usually has it on the shelf, and if you are a member, you get a discount. You could be reading it this afternoon. I have the 2nd, 3rd and 4th editions and will probably buy the 1st as well if I get it cheaply. I really like what they did with the newest edition.

Yes. Some of the changes include:
1. Fixed tons of small errors in the 3d Edition
2. The top break guns are now listed in caliber order, like the hand ejectors.
3. Newly added "brown pages" with details on certain lines, like the I frame changes after the war (a major contribution from one of the excellent collectors who frequents this Forum).
4. Updated pricing on most models.
5. More extensive coverage of the three-alpha serial numbers (not of much interest to me, but very helpful for those who own post-1982 revolvers).

And not to forget:
A photo-integrated cover binding without one of those annoying dust jackets!

(Only half-kidding, actually; on a reference book that gets used all the time, that's a really nice feature. On my older editions, I just threw the dust jackets away as they got torn up in no time.)

Absalom

My 3d Edition is threadbare from hundreds of lookups, but the dust jacket is still in top shape. I removed it years ago and stashed it behind some other books on the bookshelf.

Now, I have to keep both the 3d and 4th Editions handy because my 3d Edition has tons of pencil notes in it from information I've accumulated over the years. I'm not about to spend hours transcribing all of that over into my 4th.

I received my 4th Edition last Monday. I bring it to my shop every morning and take it home every night. I have opened it numerous times every day I have had it to look this or that up. There is much to learn.

I do that too, with books that spend most of the time sitting pretty on my shelves, just for the time when I'm reading them, but with books that get used all the time, these dust jackets tend to get orphaned. From where I'm sitting right now I can see, wait, three ..., no, four dust jackets for books which probably got left behind in some office or classroom over the last several years

It's just nice to have the sturdy photo cover on the 4th edition for a book that's usually placed out on a table somewhere in the "public" areas of my place, (my version of a coffee table book, you can tell I'm not married ), rather than the bowel-movement brown of the 3rd edition. All my gun references I have usually out, like Pate, Vanderlinden's FN book, and Bob Best's on the DA Colts, are bound like that without dust jacket these days.

That's pretty good if they're new. Amazon is at $36.71 (plus shipping unless you have Prime).
