Finally got another Highway Patrolman.
The first handgun I ever bought was a 4" Model 28. I was about 15 years old, and my Dad had to straw purchase it for me at Frank's Gun Shop in Decatur, Il, with my paper route money. It was 1974 and I think it was 110 bucks. That's a lot of paper flinging.
I took it to college with me a few years later, and would load ammo for it with my Lee Loader and mallet in the basement of the co-op house I lived in. I had to keep it in the school armory, but I shot it every week or so.
When graduation approached, my roommate decided to marry his girlfriend. I was dirt poor, working three jobs, but he made me his best man and I had to have a wedding gift. I gave him the Model 28 and the Lee Loader. We lost touch over the years, and I haven't heard from him in about 35 years.
Smiths have come and gone, but no Model 28s.
Today my son and I made the hour long trip to my favorite cop shop. It is feast or famine there - sometimes they have a pile of guns from PDs in the area, sometimes there is nothing. They only sell to cops, or in my case, used-to-be cops.
It was feast today. They had over 100 guns from a large PD - mostly HKs and Sigs and Berettas. There were some revolvers, too - a Security Six for $275, a beautiful Colt Agent .38, a .44 Mountain Gun, and this: a 4" Model 28.
Oh, buddy. I pitched 5 bills and they took it too quick. Should have tried 400, but I was smitten.
My kid bought a W. German Sig P226 9mm in great shape for 300 bucks. No mag. The owner said the PD had pitched all the mags in a box and sold them to somebody else, so he low-balled them hard and they took it. My son is delighted.
I am, too.
I don't know if this is a seized gun or an old PD gun.
It had a little bit of surface rust, which came right off. There is a little bit of freckling above the trigger on the frame, but the screws are unbuggered and the grips aren't made of old tires.
The lack of holster wear at the muzzle makes me think it wasn't a cop's holster gun.
This barrel marking makes me happy.
The grips are marked 2/82, but I don't know if they are original to the gun. Its a N prefix serial number, but it feels like it should be here rather than the 1980- section.
It has the optional red nail polish front sight. I'll probably clean that off.
It feels good to have this cousin to my first handgun back.

Congratulations on the Model 28 and for sharing the story.
I purchased a 4 inch Model 28 from another officer about two years ago. They are so well made and handle recoil exceptionally well.

Very nice!! Glad you are back in the Highway Patrolman Club again. We'll need a range report soon. Congratulations to your son too. The German made Sig is a fine gun also. I had one back in the 90s if I remember correctly, but foolishly traded it off.
Best Regards, Les

Super! You made a wise decision/purchase too! Not that it matters, but I would of done it in a heartbeat! I have a 6" no dash from 1960. Bob

Congratulations on a great purchase. Nothing beats a Highway Patrolman. My first gun, when I was 14, was also a 28-2, and I still have it. I haven't seen a Model 28 for less than $600 in a while, so I think you did well.
Cop shops are really feast or famine. I got a mint Sig 229 in .357 Sig a few years ago for $350 at my local cop shop. My old partner got a really nice 66-2 once for next to nothing. Just missed a 520 NYSP on a visit a couple of years ago, walked in as a guy bought it for $500. They thought it was "just another Highway Patrolman". Ugh! Recently all I ever see are traded in .40's.

Never a N-frame fan...... had a couple of 6" 28s pass through my hands over the years...(I got into the revolver game about the time the L-frame was introduced)..... got a set of Spegel Extended Boot grips for the second one....what a difference............
Always thought I wanted a 3 1/2 inch 27 for the cool factor....but about 10 years ago came across an almost new in box 4" 28........ swapped the 6" and a couple of bucks for it.... added the Spegel grips and .... WOW!!!!!
Added a shooter grade 4" 27-? (recessed but not pinned) to the stable about a year ago.
Still not the first guns I'd grab but really glad to have them in the "accumulation"!

DAMN!! Very nice !!!!! Even at $500, I'd say you stole that thing !!! (going by the used market down here in Georgia).
Several years back, I traded into a similar one, that wasn't nearly as nice, and I absolutely loved that thing (but still traded it), and have been on the hunt for another, ever since.
(BTW, your son made a killer score on that $300 P226, as well!)

Very nice, I've been looking for a 4" for a while. I managed to buy three six inch guns while looking. I am compulsive!

No surprises at the range today. As Doug Marcaida would say, "It will keel".
It was a nostalgiac day. I shot my Model 28, and my son's W. German 1990 Sig P226. It was a twin for the one I went through the FBI Academy with in 1991. I gave that one back as soon as I qualified with my 220, but it was like running into an old friend.
Here's my left-handed son shooting the Highway Patrolman. He likes revolvers, and has a 586 and Detective Special of his own.

gun looks fantastic, hardly any line and nice ratchets, no idiot mark on top of the side plate. High N serial, like 900,000 would be then correct with the 1982 grips, these are great and I prefer them much over the magnas...congrats!! Excellent find.

Its an earlier N serial number, N152xxx. I figure 1973 or so. The grips definitely came along later in its life.

What a great buy! Four-inch 28-2s for $500 are unheard of around here. When one does show up, they're usually priced north of $700 in gun shops. The last one I saw here is still on the shelf, priced at $850, believe it or not, and that's without box and papers.

Ok, this brings up a question for me. What's the current pricing for a 95% 6" Model 28-2 no box or papers?
Here's my reason for asking. A local guy has this gun. I'd like to buy it to go along with my 1970s 4" HP. But other than just having it for my collection, I really don't need it as I have other 6" .357s.
He's stuck on $700. I'm thinking more like $600. Should I buy or pass?
BTW: sigp220.45 - Ya done good there Bubba!

Congrats on finding that 28-2, looks sweet. Nothing like a big N frame in revolvers, imo.
Got two 4 inchers myself, both with magna's.

I saw one in a legs about two months ago in easily 95% condition for $475. It was 6 inch and had Sile wood on it.
Having two 4 inch versions I passed.
