Default My first model 10 (not sure of correct forum)

I've shot them, and loved em - just haven't owned one until today. It's a 10-7 with S/N in the picture. Only cleaned it up tonight and will shoot it this weekend. Shooter Grade for sure, no box or accessories but man it did clean up nice and I can not wait to run some lead.

Based on model number and S/N, can someone confirm it's birthday?

Not close to my book to help you with date, but that's a great looking Mod.10-7. Nickel looks good on those snubbies!

Forum would be Smith and Wesson Revolvers: 1980 to present.

Can't confirm but would guess the first half of 1983. 3rd edition of the SCS&W says ABL4000 was Jan 83 and ADE6700 was Oct 83.

Barrel is not pinned so that checks.

Very nice 10-7.

I'd say your revolver dates to 1977. The Engineering or Production change 10-7 and 10-8 both came in 1977. I was unable to find the ABS prefix serial number. I'm sure there's someone more knowledgeable that I on the forum who will come up with the ABS numbers. Now an engineering change in 82 eliminated the pinned barrel and began the 3-letter serial number prefix but I believe this would have been 5 years after the model 10-8 came about. Now I'm really confused.

Was the 10-7 only produced in 1977? That's my question and why I posted it here. Thanks to all for help.

I must be reading a different book than what you folks are. The 10-7 is a narrow barrel and the 10-8 is a heavy barrel; they complement each other. The 10-7 started in 1977 and went until the 10-9 in 1988. Notice the 10-10 (heavy barrel) was also introduced in 1988.

The three letter prefix began in the transition years of 1980-1983. They did not use them in any order. I have a 10-7 that shipped in Dec 1983 with a s/n of 18D3529.

and here is a 1981 10-8 (shipped in Dec 1981)

Notice neither barrel is pinned.

The Model 10-7 was produced from 1977 to 1988.

The three-letter serial sequence patterns are notoriously out of whack, which is why there is no absolute cut-off, but a list in the SCSW of years when certain letter combinations have been documented. In the 4th Edition I can't find an ABS, but all AB combos seem to fall into 1983 or 1984, so that's most likely your ballpark.

PS: Correction, apparently a few AB's are known from 1982.

To quote the reassurance from the SCSW, "you may be able to make an educated guess from this, you may be completely wrong, good luck with that" .... Good to know they've got a sense of humor

Congratulations on your snub nose Model 10! It looks like a nice 1. I have a 10-5 (1974) that is quite FUN to shoot. It is blue though. Bob

Default I had one of these in blue....

....I enjoyed holding it and looking at it almost as much as shooting it. Talk about 'fit and finish'!!!
