So I was on the look for a model 10 or 64 4" barrel, but had to sell a couple guns to make it possible. Sold one, had some cash in hand, but then I had the opportunity on two different model 10-5's. One was a square butt pencil barrel 4" and the other was a 2" RB HB. I was really torn. I worked a deal between the wife and the guy with the 4" and ended up with both.



The snub came in the original box with a date stamp of October 1966. The 4" did not have any box or paperwork, so I'm not sure the date for that gun. Both are very nice, but the snubby is like new except for a small blemish on the barrel. Took a little cleaning on the extractor and center pin spring to get it working right, but was just old oil gunked up inside.

Overall I'm pretty happy with my new revolver! They'll go great with my Model 36 and 640

Upon closer inspection of the 2", I only see a powder ring around one of the chambers. And there's is only the faint hint of a turn line (probably due to me). I am thinking this has seen very little use.

Nice acquisitions. I particularly like that 2" RB.

The barrel on the 4" looks pinned so must be before '81 or so. Serial number would help.

Very nice guns dubshooter. One thing I'd like to point out from your original post; you described your 2" Model 10-5 as a HB. I think if you'll take a closer look, you'll realize that gun has a tapered barrel. Also, I could be wrong, but I believe that all 10-5's were standard, or tapered barrel.

I will concede to your judgement. I'm fairly new to learning the intricacies of these old Smiths. It looks much wider than the 4" but it does taper in.

I do prefer the feel of the RB grips. But that 4" barrel sure feels good. I'm loading up some SWC loads on Sunday (back to work tomorrow) and going out Monday to try them out. I am thinking that snub might have been waiting a real long time to be fed

I love the snub nose , very nice. I would carry it everywhere, as I do mine.

You're not wrong. The 10-5 by definition is the standard-barrel variant; the 10-6 was made concurrently as the heavy-barrel variant. Both were made from 1962 to 1977. Never say never with S&W, but AFAIK there is no 10-6 snubbie (although possibly a 3" version? That I am not sure about).

PS: Looked it up. Due to the large number of special orders and variants, the section on the Model 10 in the Standard Catalog is not the easiest to work with, but it appears that while there were special orders of 2.5" and 3" HB versions, I can find no 2" HB mentioned.

Looks like the toe of the grip frame on the 4" gun has been trimmed a la Fuzzy Farrant. Or is that just the photo angle ?

I think it is the angle. Gun appears to be unaltered except for a few dings and scratches

So, with my untrained eye, it looks as though this snub nose 10-5 is unfired. I was talking to a buddy of mine and he told me he would leave it unfired as it may be an interest to a collector. I am not much of a collector but like my guns to serve their purpose, which is to move pieces of lead fairly quickly at a given target.

Is it dumb of me to take this revolver on it's possible maiden voyage after nearly 51 years of waiting?

To me, the answer is easy. I'm not a collector either, and any gun I purchase will eventually be fired. It appears you fit into this category as well.

Model 10s the only thing better than getting another one is working it out and getting two wow what a good day . Take em out and shoot em let us know how it goes with a range report.

If you look at 2" .38 M & Ps from before and early into model stamping, they had thinner profile barrels than this one - imagine the 4" 10-5 barrel cut to 2" and you would be close.

Also, 3" model 10s (and 36s) have a similar profile barrel to this one that is referred to as "heavy", as opposed to the untapered or "bull" barrel of the model 10-6 and 36-1.

So in S & W land, this is a "standard" barrel for a 2" 10-5, but a "heavy" barrel relative to the earlier style. Clear as mud .

Even though the 2" version is a bit less common, the Model 10 is simply too widely available and there are too many of them for it to become a sought-after collectible in our lifetime, which would have to happen for the "possibly unfired" status to make a significant value difference.

What's the point of sitting on a nice shooter for 10 or 20 years unfired just so you (or your estate ) maybe get a hundred more for it upon resale?

Nice pair. I've got the same set of 10-5's, although my 2" is a square butt. Classic S&W revolvers . . .

That was my thinking. And I would have to have kids to pass them on to. 11 years so far and been able to dodge that bullet with the wife. if I don't shoot it, someone else probably will one day

Out they went today. 10 yards with a mix of SWC and FN bullets. Had a blast.
