Default Why Engrave a Model 10 M&P???

Most of my engraved guns are N-Frame and K-Frame target sighted guns. In the years I've collected engraved S&Ws, I have come across a bunch of engraved M&Ps, which always surprises me as to why someone would put all the money and effort into engraving the most common S&W model. Many of the ones that I have seen were engraved just after the war and appeared to be done in Germany for servicemen and I kind of understand that - the M&Ps were available and the talent was there for a reasonable cost... Regardless of the reason, I have looked a them for years, but never purchased one... That is until I found this one and after watching it for months, I was finally able to negotiate a price that made sense for me... So, enough of the story, here are the photos:

Not the finest piece that I own, but a well executed pattern with a couple of beautiful silver inlays.

Thanks for letting me share,

Simply beautiful. Perfect. Personally I have always felt that the model 10 and it's predecesors are near pefect handguns. They are light, fast, accurate and reliable. Fixed sights which I believe an asset in a self defence situation. Please don't take wrong, I like them all. But if I could have only one it would be a #10. Probably with a 4" barrel. Sir, you have a truly magnificent specimen, thank you for sharing. Sonora

Richard:

Thanks for sharing. That is a splendid revolver. As Sonora says, the M&P model is near the perfect revolver. I have a number of them, but none as beautiful as this one. I like the pattern a lot, and the silver inlays are very tastefully done.

Best Regards, Les

Also the most iconic S&W of all time IMO. The engraving is world class. Let me know if you decide to sell it. Regards.

I grew living and working in NYC and then Long Island NY. Always wanted a model 10 with the heavy barrel but what with the draconian laws there never bothered. When I retired to Louisiana I had occasion to go back home and took a copy of a buddy's FFL just in case. When asked if he had any model 10's he had one of the guys drag out a large cardboard box full of them. Then he says I can't touch them unless I have a pistol permit so I hand him my Louisiana concealed handgun permit and he gets confused. He takes it to the owner whom I've known for over 20 years and lets me rummage through the box. Found the nicest one hand him the ffl and he sends it to my friends shop. Got home before I did. Best part it cost me $100 plus whatever it cost to ship here. Still have it and occasionally take her out on a date. Thanks for the memories and a great engraved model 10. Frank

Excellent photographs of a beautiful revolver.

Am I right in guessing you'll have it lettered? Just curious to know what, if anything, you know about the gun now...like when it was manufactured, or any details regarding the engraver?

Looks to be a great addition to your collection. Congratulations.

I probably will not letter this one, as I know it is aftermarket engraving. It is a 10-5 and based on its serial number (D26235), I would expect that it shipped somewhere in the 1968-ish time frame.

The engraver was "M. Smith" and he/she marked the gun accordingly - see close-up photo of just below the cylinder on the left side of the frame:

I have not been able to find any specific information about a M Smith engraver, but I continue to look... I am open to any ideas
or suggestions?

Whoever he was, he did a right fine job on that Mod 10. I'd love to have one of my 2" Mod 10's done by him.

Why engrave it? Looks beautiful! Or... a BBQ gun for a retired LEO who carried an unembelished model 10 for years?

Now that's just pretty.

I'm a big Model 10 fan. When I sold off most of my guns, a 10-5 was one of the ones I kept.

Somewhere in between those two numbers. I got this one home to me in the safe for under $2K, which is not inexpensive, but considering the engraver's time and effort, along with the creativity and the inlays, I thought it was a bargain. It is significantly cheaper than finding the right gun for an engraving project, selecting an engraver, envisioning the project with the engraver, commissioning him/her to cut the piece, getting it re-blued and then waiting the 6-16 months for it to be completed...

Here's a link to a thread for an engraved gun that I have in process with one of my engraver friends: In Process... A Pre-27 357 Engraved Masterpiece in the Making [UPDATED 12/22]
