Default It's done! My 3" RB .41mag 28-2 Highway Patrolman

I bought this 28-2 out of the classifieds a while back. I knew from the description that it was going to be a little rough but when it arrived it was much worse than described, the cylinder would bind on a couple of chambers, there was rust pitting in addition to the dings and scrapes. I couldn't shoot it, and couldn't sell it in good conscience without losing a bunch of money, so I stuck it a drawer and left it there. It would probably still be there if I hadn't run across titanium .41mag cylinders on Numrich's site for just $87! Seeing that gave me the idea to do a caliber conversion and spruce it up some. I ordered a cylinder and found a nice M58 barrel on ebay and called Mark Hartshorne at Pinnacle High Performance Guns.

Mark is an outstanding revolversmith (and former 1911 racegun builder), he's responsible for my tricked out 9mm/.38spl S&W 360J convertible. I told Mark what I had and what I wanted - a 3", round butt, titanium cylinder .41mag 28-2! I've had several caliber converted guns, including the CROWBAR, my .45acp 28-2, and I think they're pretty cool. The vision I had in my head for this gun was a 3" RB S&W M13 on steroids.

Mark did terrific job on it. It looks tough as hell, especially with the thick M58 barrel cut down to 3". It has a nice heft to it and it balances well, just a little bit muzzle heavy. He did a great job of cleaning up the blemishes and it looks terrific, there's just a few remnants of the pitting left, no big deal since this is to be a working gun. He put in a lot of attention to detail, from breaking all of the edges, to the new barrel crown, and even removing what was left of the factory roll marks from the barrel after cutting it. The finish is matte blue and it contrasts nicely with the titanium. The cylinder timing is spot on and the lock up is excellent, as is the trigger, both single and double action. I've only had time to shoot one quick cylinder full through it at about 10yds but it shot to point of aim and was very manageable with 175gr Silvertips.

I ordered some leather for it from forum member 05CarbonDRZ who does amazing work, he's made me gear for the Crowbar as well as a Colt Government I gave my dad. This is going to be a great gun for carrying around my property and in the woods, and pretty much everywhere else, too! I honestly could not be happier with how it turned out, it is exactly what I had in mind. And, as usual, Mark Hartshorne was great to work with, if your looking for someone to do revolver work for you he should be at the top of your list. That's a serious shootin' iron right there. I had thoughts years ago about cutting down my Model 58 to 3" but it reared and bucked enough as it was.

Have fun with a nice looking rig.

You have had some great conversions, this is another. Nice!

I've been thinking about sending Mark a 681 for a round butt and chop to 3 inch.

I'll be passing near his shop later this month.......mmmm

I put 6rds of Silvertips through it real quick when I got it home. It shot straight at 10yds and was surprisingly manageable, I think it'll be a good piece for social carry.

I like it! I especially like how the adjustable rear sight was blended to the Model 58 frame.

It's a 28-2 frame with a shortened M58 barrel and titanium M357 cylinder. The rear sight is the factory M28 adjustable, Mark made the front sight for it himself.

A terrific save. Congratulations to you for your vision and Mr. Hartshorne for his execution.

I have mostly spent my collecting dollars on the far side of 1950, but 2"-3" N-frames are among my favorite newer revolvers.

That is just plain outstanding. S&W could take Lessons! Putting that ultra light cylinder into that steel frame is just plain brilliant!

Just checked it, 35.1 ounces. IIRC, the 4" 28s and 58s were about 42 ounces, so a little under a half pound weight savings.
