Default Detroit PD 2"

Finally got around to taking some photos of my Mod. 10-5 2" Detroit PD gun. Had really rough non matching grips, so pulled these Eagle Secret Service grips from the box.

That's a nice looking gun. You can't beat a Md 10 snubbie! I know, I have two. I have a question if anyone can answer though. I've been wondering about using +P rounds (like the new 130 load that's seated deep so the bullet isn't exposed) in my Md 10-5 blue steel revolver. On the website I've read yes, sparingly, and no not rated, and "well maybe". Anyone ever contact S&W directly and ask?

Thanks.

Tim:

That is a great gun, and a great piece of history!! I'll bet if it could only talk, what stories it could tell. I like those Secret Service stocks, they sure look good with that nickle finish. But the provenance is the real icing on this cake!!

Best Regarda, Les

As I remember Smith and Wesson's take on +P ammo is. Any of their revolvers with a model number, NOT model name, should be safe with FACTORY +P ammo.

Any factory + P rated load is perfectly safe in any steel model stamped K frame .38 Special. Enjoy!

Beautiful pistol! You should be able to shoot all the +P you want. +P is not near what it used to be and years ago (Post WW2 ) S&W advertised their 2" long action M&P Revolver as being perfectly safe to shoot the 38/44 ammo. At the time 38/44 was rated at 1125 fps (6" barrel?) which is much hotter than any of today's +P except maybe Buffalo Bore.

Note: The advertisement I refer to has been posted on this sight in the past.

Thanks for the info on the +P guys. I'm looking to throw some Gold Dot short barrels in my 10-5!

Hey Kansas... I got his older brother: 38 M&P, entered service Feb. 1948, and retired with Detroit PD Lt. Baglaj in 1977. Holster was also his, badges and bracelets are from the period. Guess Detroit PD loved their nickel snubbies

Both of those nickel plated snubbies are gorgeous!!!! I wonder if James Tarr ever carried one? I remember him saying in one of his articles that he was in the Detroit PD for a while.

Also, thanks all on the +P question. I plan on using some HST 130grn +Ps once they are widely available.

Randy,
I really like that older M&P that you have. All the accessories and provenance is icing on the cake!
I've been told that the Detroit PD was the largest single customer for nickel guns from S&W.

Here is my post regarding the Federal HST Micro Ammo over in the Ammo Category, it's clearly not that high a pressure even though it's marked as "+P":

Well I had a chance this morning to chronograph this ammo. At about a buck a round, I only shot five through each of three guns. Not truly scientific with such a small sample, but it appears to be right on for factory claims regarding consistency of velocity, but in my 2" & 3" guns the velocity is well below the factory published number of 890 fps. I do not see on Federals website what barrel length or type they are using for their numbers.

2" S&W M337:
High 800 fps
Low 799 fps
Yes, a total for five shots of 1 fps variance.

3" Custom Colt Agent:
High 859 fps
Low 855 fps
Extreme spread of 4 fps.

4" S&W M67:
High 889 fps
Low 885 fps
Extreme spread of 4 fps.

Just for a control group, I then fired five Federal 148gr HBWC Gold Metal Match through the M67 for an average velocity of 753 fps and an extreme spread of 26 fps and a standard deviation of 10 fps. This M67 will shoot into 3.5" at 50 yards with the FGMM ammo off of sandbags.

Ammo lot # R12P1394144 Federal Premium P38HST1S 130gr HSP JHP 130gr

Hey Randy, I think I used to own that gun.

And yes, the DPD must have really liked all their nickel guns. I remember dad's 1st duty revolver that was his department issue as a rookie.

I don't remember what model, but I'm sure it was a S&W 38 special, most likely with a 5 inch barrel, and probably the current offering from S&W for 1950. and yes, that gun was also Nickel plated. Probably some early version of a model 10.

Dad actually had a Negligent Discharge with that gun inside our house, while the whole family was home. I was about 9 years old at the time. (Feel free to ask me sometime).
