Default Model 56

Hey guys,

I ran into a rare bird this week and really don't know how to validate, outside of a letter from S&W, this is the real deal. My instincts tell me this is really a Model 56 but there's no way I can say for sure. It has the US marking on the smooth backstrap. The model number on the yoke and the US seem to be struck fairly lightly. The SN is in range. The stocks seem to match. Thoughts?

I didn't snag it because it wasn't lettered and the asking price was about what you'd expect for one lettered and in really good condition. I didn't even get to the negotiation stage because I really didn't know what all to look for at the time on a 56.

I found a post on this site where somebody was asking for a value to sell a model 56 in 2011. A reply states the serial range was k500001-k515205 which places this one in that serial range. They estimated value in 2011 at $4600. Hope this helps some.

The model 56 has a distinct appearance of the top strap/rear sight leaf.

If you are interested at the offered price, you could make an offer contingent upon verification it is original with the letter of authenticity. These are quite rare and you may not find another for a very long time. Good luck in your decision.

Thanks for the advice. I think that's a good strategy. It's funny what you run into sometimes when you're just seeing what a shop has for sale.
