Default got lucky...model 29-2

update on my lucky find: Complying with NJ rules transfer is now complete and I picked it up. A super nice 29-2. My friend bought it in July 1978 in Charleston SC and had it in his safe ever since that day stored in the presentation case with all papers. I was lucky that he decided to sell it to me. This one will stay with me until I can't shoot any longer. Wow, is the action smooth...

What a score, congrats! You sure did get lucky. Looks FANTASTIC, as it should I guess if it's been sitting in a safe since '78 lol.

That looks really excellent. If he really stored it in presentation case, you're lucky the side it was laying on isn't freckled or pitted. Congrats on a great piece!

That is a nice revolver. Really nice!
Congrats on your good luck!

If you don't reload, this is a great excuse to get started.
Shooting light magnum loads in that gun will make you love it even more.

Thanks for your comments. I think a nice older 29 in this condition is rather hard to find and I am very grateful for it. The gun was all the way on the top shelf and the back of the safe with some other 50 guns or more piled in. The case has some scratches here and there but the gun not at all. He told me he always used a dessicant dryer in the safe. The Gun was tight and stiff like Hillary but after a spray down with Ballistol and then a good message with Ren Wax the shine and blue came out so nice...I also got a K-38 and Model 58 from that same safe but thank you NJ for the wait. 30 and 30 days.

For sure that is the most fun about it. My plan is the following:
240 Nosler JSP
12 to 14.5 gr 2400
or
7 to 9 gr. HS-6
and see how that goes.

I use that same bullet, but IMR4227 powder, 19.2 gr with standard primer. Gives me a great 'light' magnum load that is quite accurate in my 29-2s.

well, only for handguns you need special issued purchase licenses that is good for 90 days plus another 90 day extension. Once you have them in hand, you can go purchase . When you do the next purchase, you need to wait 30 days. That means you can apply for 6 licenses every 1/2 year if you use one every 30 days. You can also apply for a multiple purchase license but that gets even more complicated than you like to know...In addition, I need reference letters every 6 months (for every 6 such licenses I am getting) and full FBI fingerprinting background check every 12 months over again for the next batch of licenses. Northeast gun laws may be worth an extra thread...

That is a very nice 29-2, you are a lucky man, except for the living in NJ part.

I think lucky is a perfectly good name for a model 29.

Enjoy!

If I ever needed an excuse, and I don't, to not move to New Jersey that would be it! I don't know how you guys do it. I do love my Georgia gun laws.

It is actually worse, one handgun every 30 days! It took the OP 90 days to get these 3 handguns!

Looks like a 6 1/2 inch barrel, even better! My 29-2 is about 10 years older and It still looks good and shoots great! Congratulations, enjoy for a long, long time.

OP;

That is one sweet package! They just don't come better than that in my opinion.

Interesting question regarding the case. My 29-2 with 6" bbl also came with factory case and tools, but tools were in the factory bag and inside a rectangular cutout with a tool box cover. My serial number is clearly 1980 and yours is a 1978 purchase, but your case tools are exposed in separate pockets, and the gun is pointing to the left, whereas mine the gun points to the right.

I know mine needs new flocking top and bottom but the molded plastic insert appears correct for 1980 per SCSW 4th.

Seems like a big time expensive change in case design and layout for S & W and I wonder what brought that about (left or right orientation).....maybe the change from 6-1/2" down to 6" bbl??

Just wondering but if anyone has an idea let us know.

Mine shoots just as sweet as it looks, even with full house ammo. Cost wise even though I am winding down, it looks like basic reloading 101 for me, or else the groceries may suffer when I get the urge to shoot the 29-2

I got a 57 in 6'' but I also think that extra 1/2'' adds to the feel and how it points...love it.

Correct, I own around 20 handguns and that would take me almost 2 years to acquire if I would buy back to back. Not to get political but NY, NJ and CA are always models for some to push the rest of the country towards...be aware of it! Gun, hunting and outdoors culture are alive and well here though despite all of it.

When you put in that way, it sounds like a pretty fast buying pace. But those 30 day waits must be miserable. I get my transfers delayed by the DOJ for no apparent reason most every time, and those 2-4 day delays are long enough.

Wow. That is a sweet looking gun!

I'm curious, as it looks as though you have the original store receipt. How much did a Model 29 cost back then?

The receipt shows $350 for the gun plus tax. July 1978.

They certainly were not cheap. That's about $1,300 in today's dollars.

If I could walk into a store today and buy some more old Smiths NIB at that price and quality compared to the current production, I would be in the car now and not sitting here. I tried to like the new guns but just can't. SW: Please move past that crazy lock already.

What a score. I had one that nice I fell on at a local small gun shop. It was so cheap, I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough. Then after looking it over, I noticed the gun was nearly mint. So good that I only shot it on occasion and wouldn't carry it in the woods to hunt with. I mentioned this on the forum a few years back and a lucky forum memeber made me a offer to sell it to his collection I couldn't refuse. My other M29/629 are all shooters and hunting tools. Super nice but not "mint in box" nice.

I disregarded people's advise and not left it NIB. Friday night a thunderstorm came through, drove through it to the range, the clouds cleared up to a nice sunset against the backstop. I was alone, set up some targets at 25 and fired away. Was so much fun, more so than looking at it in the box. Can't take it with me at the end.

I am with you on shooting it occasionally. It is fun,and as long as you take care with it and clean it up nice after each shooting it will hold its value just fine. I do not own any guns that I don't shoot at least once in a while. That is what they are made for (shooting). Glad you got to enjoy it!!

I'm with you also on shooting it, 18 months I ago bought a unfired Colt python from a friend, the next day I put 100 rounds through it. I took it home and cleaned it, it still looks like new. I don't holster it or rub it in the dirt , so it should stay in that shape for a long time to come. Let my son worry about value when I give it to him.
