Model 36 No Dash - Several Questions
I recently picked up a Model 36 No Dash, S/N J345XX. It came in a blue 2-piece box with matching serial number on the label.
The bluing is good to excellent and the S/N is stamped on the inside of the left grip. There is a light turn line on the cylinder and the 2" barrel looks pristine, maybe even unfired.
How old is this gun?
It's marked 38 S&W SPL. Will it handle .38 Special Federal Nyclads?
Is there any reason that I shouldn't add this to my CCW rotation?
For those of you that carry a Model 36: can you recommend some larger grips? The factory grips are really tiny in my hand!
Someone buggered up the two round head screws. What's a good source for replacements?
Finally, and for extra credit, why did (does?) S&W put the labels on the box up-side-down?
Thanks!!

Made in 1969ish.

Yes. Although it may jump a bit in your hand with that ammo.

Absolutely not. My daily carry gun is a Model 36, made in 1964.

Mine is a square butt and is comfortable to shoot with the factory diamond Magna stocks. The round butt J frames don't fit me as well. You might just try adding a Tyler T grip and see if that adds enough bulk to satisfy you. There are two types of target stocks for the J frames, but I've not found either of them to be particularly comfortable and one of them is downright ugly.

Try JackFirst or Numrich. Both are online and can be found with a simple Google search.

I've seen a couple explanations for this. One has to do with the two halves not separating when the shipping team at S&W took them out of the vault to send to the customer. With the label upside down, the label could be read with the box stored upside down and the smaller bottom tucked inside the larger top. That might be the answer.
On the other hand, I've always thought that it had to do with them being on display at the gun shop. When I was a kid in the 1950s and 1960s, all the gun shops I went to displayed S&W revolvers (and pistols) under glass and in their boxes. The end label always pointed out so it could be seen by the customer with the box bottom set inside the upside down top and the gun visible. That way, you could see the gun on display and still read the label to identify it.
I honestly don't know which of these explanations might be right (or neither of them) but both make sense to me!
Cheers!

Pachmehr grips
Pachmehr grips improved my scores by about 25%. I wasn't too good at shooting snubs, but that really helped. It also makes it way more comfortable to shoot, especially with SD ammo.
It will handle an .38 special standard ammo. It can also handle +P but I don't give mine a steady diet of it.
It is an EXCELLENT gun to put in your rotation.
I have a mod 38 (alloy) that is hard to shoot without the Hogue monogrip I put one it.

I agree, my 637 is very rough to shoot with +P's even with the rubber grips that came on it.

I've had good success finding obscure screws from Al Bolduc at The Gun Garage ("gun-garage") on E***.
And....we like pictures!

Try a set of hogue grips, they work well on mine. Several of my friends and my daughter like them well enough that they got the same grip for their J frames.

Not all Nyclad ammo is Plus P. In fact, they used to make a version with a 125 grain HP bullet at about 825 FPS (factory specs). Called the Chief Special load, it was meant for guns just like yours.
Today, I'd load Speer's 135 grain Short Barrel ammo or maybe the full wadcutter load from Buffalo Bore (about 850 FPS, not the lighter Mid-Range wadcutter) or the lead SWC-HP load from Remington or Buffalo Bore. These are defense loads, for killing things, not routine target ammo. So the added cost is modest, in view of how well they protect you. You won't be shooting a lot of them in practice.
The J-frame grips I use are older two-panel Pachmayr Presentation Compacs or factory smooth rosewood Magnas with a Tyler adaptor. Be wary of getting grips so large they compromise concealibility.

I have a Tyler T-grip on my 36ND, adds a lot of grip to the magnas.
BK grip adapters are the same thing and easier to get.

Thanks for all the speedy replies! I've already ordered replacement screws.
There's some great "corporate" knowledge on this forum!
Thanks again!
