Default What's the going rate for a 15-2?

Saw 1 last weekend for $550.00. 5" I think, in pretty good shape. The gun shop guy's comment was that it was an old police revolver.

Not a bad price. Go in the shop with cash. Do a little haggling with cash.
Has to be a little wiggle left dealing with a shop. Just check it out before you start. Do you know all the things to check?

"Pretty good shape" covers a multitude of sins. About 2 years ago, I purchased a 15-6 police/security turnin for $250 and then spent about that for a professional re-blue. I bought a 15-3 on GunBroker for $300 that was 99% condition with box and papers. That was admittedly a great score and I gambled on a vague description with one blurry picture.

I have a thing for the Model 15 as one was my first centerfire handgun back in 1962.

Depending on condition, the market in your location, and presence/absence of box and papers, I think $550 is high. While there may have been 5" Model 15s, I bet it's actually a 4".

Thanks for the replies. I'm really not in the market right now but a K-38 is on the wish list. The gun shop guy was Mr. Know-it-all so I wouldn't buy it from him anyway.

I paid $400.00 for mine, but that was several years ago now, I guess. I grabbed it because it had diamond target stocks. I figured I bought the stocks and the gun came with it. While that's not quite literally true, I probably wouldn't have bought the gun without the stocks.

Today, I'd expect one like it to cost at least $500.

$550 would be high if it was an old police gun. I've seen correction dept trade ins for around $350.

$550 would be reasonable for one in very good to NIB condition.

Around here Model 15's are scarce as hens teeth. I just found a shooter for $400 and was tickled to get it. A nice one with box and tools will go in the $600-650 range. Saw a couple at a gun show last week lnib with $700 asking and owner wouldn't budge on price. Not sure why prices are so high on 15's unless it's because there doesn't seem to be any around.

I love Model 15s and have paid a wide range of prices
for specimens in various conditions.

Price is what you're willing to pay but a nicely blued one, maybe
some wear at the muzzle or on the sharp corners of the cylinder,
can still easily fetch $450 or more.

A main concern is to check for its timing, seeing that it locks
up just before th hammer falls in DA or locks solidly a little bit
before while testing the SA. And the DA pull should be smooth,
not necessarily light, but smooth.

Sometimes just finding one with a bit of wear but unworn stocks
numbered to the gun make more money worth it. Or maybe
you like wide target hammers and triggers, then you'll pay more.

Now, back to my quest of finding a half dozen unissued
USAF Model 15s still pristine in their boxes with a price
tag on each of $79.95. I just know they are tucked
away somewhere!

Not really a fair comparison but here's a -3 that I recently got for $200 from a guy needing some quick cash.

As mentioned above, it's most likely a 4" barrel. I've never heard of a 5" Model 15, and I just read that there were some 6" ones made, but i've never seen them, so they're probably not common, and a 6" .38 revlover was not likely to have been carried by cops in the era they were made. Yep, gotta be the typical 4".
Anyway, "pretty good shape" leaves a lot of wiggle room on valuation. Also, the grips make a good bit of difference. Does it have the more common magnas, or nice target grips, or some really nice aftermarket exotic wood grips, or just some old rubber from Pachmayr or Hogue ?
Also, area of the country seems to be a big factor in nearly all gun valuations, some places they're pretty reasonable, in others, they command steep prices.
Depending on actual condition (but assuming 'pretty good'), and which grips are on it, I'd say a minimum $400, up to around 500. Any more and I'd walk.

I won this one last month on Gunbroker for a total of $475, after shipping and transfer fee.

I vaguely remember reading on one of the threads here, that the LAPD did a special run of 5" model 15s sometime in the 1960s. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

There were 365 5" Combat Materpieces made for the Missouri State Highway Patrol in the 50's and a few years later a small quantity made for the Illinois State Police I believe? Here's my 5" MSHP that was purchased from the son of the original owner.

No, there's not but seldom am I at the right place at any time.
And when he said he needed some quick cash and kept pulling out guns, I thought what the heck. Included were a P35 High Power ($200) and an FAL ($600) built on Stg 58 kit and all functioned well. The FAL rings the gong at 500 yds. using bipod and open sights with various milsurp ammo. The HP is Hungarian and shows carry marks, but has all matching numbers and shoots as well as any FN I've had.
Sorry for any drift.
