If you get to $400, you are in Mod-10 territory. Sounds like a field gun in a holster. What are you going to loose.

For what I envision of your description, I think $400 is some high. I'd agree on $300 shooter. But, it might not be as bad as I think. If it is not pitted, and surface rust could be removed without too much damage to the bluing it would probably be a $400 gun, (some may think $500).

A few more details would help establish its value. The two most obvious --
1. Original Stocks or at least S&W Stocks (not Pachs or the like)?
2. Barrel Length? Four inch should raise the price a little ...

I would be tempted to pay $400 unless it really looks horrible. I already have one or two of those!

my weekly shooter was unfired but had red rust spots all over it. Soaked in Kroil, went at it with 0000 steel wool and Flitz. Here you go. It's my favorite gun and I love it. I made it my own. It is a tad more glossy and the blue thinner than before but I do not care. The key seemed to be letting time work and the soaking take care of it. The final step was leaving RIG grease sit on it for weeks while the dark pitting spots healed themselves. The gun is even getting better over time. It was a fun project, I had no idea how it was going to work out but it ended up on top. If you can get it cheap, run with it.

I agree. Using this method ( except I use 0000 bronze wool) you can make a "silk purse out of a sows ear". My favorite K frame shooter is this 15-4 that was peppered with rust spots. I bought it right and, as you can see, it turned out great. So if you really want a nice shooter, and you can get it for a good price, do it.

I never heard about using RIG Grease on dark rust spots. Could you explain the process better?

I seems such rescue project guns mean more to the owners than buying NIB from the store. I can tell you mine is among the last I ever sell.

RIG is a white jar/yellow label and says: Rust Inhibiton Grease. I use that on some pivot points and rotting parts such as ejectors, shotgun pivots etc.

I thought I can't hurt the gun and may protect it from those rust pits developing again.

The rust pits I had removed with wool, flitz etc leaving a smooth surface but rather dark spots where the pits were (worst on the cylinder, you still can see such a dark spot on image 1). To my surprise over time they became less visible and started disappearing.

Had I know this before I may have have done easier on the Flitz which I found the harshest on the original blue. More so than 0000 steel wool. Next time I do only Kroil, brass wool and RIG grease. Those projects are the most fun especially when you paid little for the treasure you found.

I once bought a Model 15-3 that I thought had been Parkarized or had some other type of flat finish applied to it. It was a sort of greenish/brown color. I'd had it for some time and taken it to the range a couple of times before I pulled the stocks and noticed the metal under them wasn't the same color.

A little work with Flitz in an out of the way spot revealed that what I thought was finish, was simply very fine rust. Under that rust was a blue finish about like the one on OLDSTER's gun. A hour or so of work with the Flitz and a soft rag and it looked like a different gun.

Three s&w revolvers from the same online dealer, he called it rust, it was a reddish orange but I got lucky it was dried gun oil. The guns are 99.99% condition. I lucked out.

I am jealous. Possibly insanely, but still.

Very nice find, love the smooth targets!. Keep in mind, Kroil soak first, go easy and very slow, soak, rub with bronze or copper wool, soak again, rub again. Then you get a nice 4 inches. One of the coolest SW in my book.

What did you end up paying?

Have not bought it yet! I am thinking $350.

I have N frames in various flavors but almost all of them now are to valuable to really shoot. I want to shoot it lots!

turn line looks decent, look into the barrel and see if there is a bit of rust in there which I doubt there will be. I do not see the backplate but if that and the cylinder play/endshake checks out, offer 325 or let me have it for that. I have a mint 200xxx in 4'' that shoots like a laser, no less accurate than any of my 6''. I could use another shooter grade 4'' or better say must have...

The barrel is fine. Zero end shake, crane shake, and cylinder shake. Just the rust is the issue.

The smooth Football Targets might be worth upwards of $100 by themselves if they clean up ok. I really doubt they are original to the gun so if you were to sell them to recoup a little on the purchase price, no real crime there.

The four inch barrel enhances the value a little. If you can get it for $350, that would be a fine deal. I would probably go ahead and pay the $450 if he refuses to come down, if I really wanted a 4" N-Frame shooter.

I'd pay the $450, sell off the Football Targets and be happy with a 4 inch tank. The rust'll clean up nice, the gun will have some patina.

The frontier pads that I ordered from a guy in north dakota, I think, are better than steel wool, will take off rust and not harm even good blue. They look like a dish washing scouring pad.

Big 45 frontier rust removal pads, look them up, really work, will not harm blue.

Zero end shake, crane shake, and cylinder shake is far more important to me than superficial rust.

They are holding at $450, tax inc.

I'll try to whittle them down later this week!

Ugg, too much! I would stand fast at $375 OTD.

I'm planning on going back later. Just give 'em some time to see why I'm right and they are wrong. I do think it will be there when I go back.

I would pay the money, take it home and start tinkering with it. A bit of love goes a long way. If it was here, or nearby, you would miss out. LOL! They seldom show up here in any condition. And I kinda like them that way, as weird as that sounds. I have owned pristine blued guns, and I always worry about dinging them when I'm out shooting or hunting, and I usually end up selling them. One that is "already dinged" just suits my style better. I'm not a collector. I'm an accumulator. And I use my guns.

There'll always be some evidence of the rust remaining on it no matter what you use to remove it. Especially on the stuff that's within the sandblaster finished areas.
There's some pretty good rust patches and spots on that gun. I've cleaned 100's of them up over the years and some come out pretty spectacular, others not so much.

The all important mechanics sound good.

At this point you just put a price on it and it either becomes yours or not.
If $25 one way or the other becomes the issue,,then I figure there's either too much about the gun that bothers the buyer or it's more about the game of buy & sell than wanting the to own that particular gun.
Folks pay that much at the BurgerKing counter for a fabulous dinner for 4 and think nothing of it.

I was expecting much worse. I think you would be very surprised how good that one would look after just a bit of TCL.

It's a project gun. Pay what you think is right for it.

I would be buy it at $400, but then I am a sucker for N frames. To me it would be an ideal starting point to make into a big bore. Like I need another 45 colt LOL. But, thats what I always see when I see a old N frame with issues.

If you can get it at $400 and the metal is good - no pitting - might be worth picking up as a project gun.

If the metal is really good, there are some great professional gunsmiths that can give it a gorgeous new bluing job.

If it's a little rough, maybe a basic bluing job and bead blast finish.

If you really like the gun, there are many other finishes that might bring it back like cerakote.



This is a model 19-8 from around 1999 I picked up for $250, the finish was shot but the metal was good. for about $350 I sent it into S&W for a combat Revolver package, the red ramp sights, and a matte bead blast finish. Added a pair of nice grips, and a laser etching of an eagle.

Nice aspect, you can buy the gun and have the work done a couple of years latter to spread out the cost.


Disclaimer, you will never get as much as you put into one of these restoration on resale - but you get a damn nice gun that no one else has anywhere.

Yea I do the same thing at gun shows - amazing what a wad of green will get ya sometimes.

In the past when my LGS it was impossible to get waited on. I seen what I wanted and to stake my claim I waved my ccw permit and DL to get waited on. The salesman would run over.

When you guys were younger and dating and met a slinky girl with may
be a little acne or blemish on her face or neck, did you pass? A little rust dont scare me.

There are many options for what you could with this gun. Clean it up as a shooter; clean it and refinish with hard chrome or something as a hard use woods gun; make it into something like a .45 Colt and hard chrome it for a hard use woods gun ... your imagination is the limit.
