36-1 Deal ?
Went poking around a local shop today and found a 36-1 for $499. I think it may be a little high from what I'm seeing on sights like gunbroker. I have never purchased an older pistol before and curious on price. It looks in good condition, some wear on the grip but bluing is good, lockup feels good. What do you all think. They also had a Ruger Service Six that felt good in hand but had a bit of bluing worn off including some at the muzzle crown end (which worries me). Thanks in advance to all reply's. It may be worth saying I have only owned one S&W j frame a model 438 that had a horrible trigger and I couldn't hit the side of a barn with at seven yards.

Seems a little high to me.. I seen one for $250 in really nice shape at a lgs. Went back next day it was gone. Unless it's perfect with original grips and has the box even then I would try to negotiate down but that would be a good place to start for a shop with a perfect one.

The piece isn't perfect and has no box but is in better shape than the Ruger. I don't know if is the grip on the 36 (original) or just the shape of the grip feels a lot smaller to me than a new j frame.

The ruger service six, security six, and speed six were a very good gun also. I own a 6 inch stainless steel security six I like a lot. They were made in 357 and 38 special. The 357 versions are worth more but still at very reasonable prices. Between $250 and $400 are about the going rates with some people asking quite a bit more. Never hurts if your interested to throw a low price out there sometimes I have been surprised at what they have been willing to take for the older and "outdated" revolvers. They are just not what a lot of the younger buyers are looking for.

PSA: If the price is the same or higher than Gunbroker, it's definitely high. Gunbroker is significantly more expensive than my local gun stores.

The 36-1 is the heavy barrel 3" version and usually found with a square butt grip frame although many were also made with RB grip frames (I prefer the SB).
The 36-1 was introduced just after the flat latch cylinder release was changed back but right before the change from diamond Magnas to non diamond Magnas so the very earliest 36-1s have diamond Magnas which IMO get a premium over later versions (in 11 years i have only seen two).
Also the late 60's era non diamond Magnas would have a slightly larger checkering pattern giving them a slight premium over the later versions IMO.

Just sold a 36 no dash, probably 95% with original grips, no box or papers for $450 on consignment. It lasted about 3 weeks, 2 with S&W boot grips from a S&W model 638 I put on it and a week after I put the originals back on.

Today, I was offered a 3", RB, 36-1, '76 - '77 serial number, in about 95% (always open to the eyes of the beholder), with much younger smooth magna S&W stocks, no box, tools, etc. for $450.00. Still mulling it over. I think it's a little high but this one wont come down. hardcase60

For that price you can still find a better one - possibly with box & papers too.

Buy em both that is my motto ,seriously though buy em both . Welcome to the forum they don't generally let us talk about Rug Ruggg Rugggerrahhhhs here but mine are good shooters and rugged as long as theere is no actual damage to where the rifling meets the crown I wouldn't be afraid of a little blueing wear as far as the S&W goes if you pay a little too much and take care of it eventually it will be worth more that's just my opinion and don't cout it as investment advice as I am well renouned for paying too much if I like a gun .
