Default Gun Shows are Dangerous: Model 58 Nickel

Went to the Greensboro, NC gun show today. Was not looking for anything in particular. Saw a lot of old friends and quite a few forum members. There were a great deal of really nice S&W revolvers but most sellers did not get the memo that S&W prices have softened.

Walking around the show I saw a gentleman with a silver revolver box. I inquired and he had an absolutely pristine Model 58 in nickel. PC magna grips (that number to the gun). All paperwork included and even had the unopened tools. The box is a little tattered, one end broken loose, but it is the original box for the gun. We dickered and could not come to an agreement on the gun. (Probably because I'm cheap). At the end of the show I decided that I really should have bought the gun as it is one of the few nickel 58's I have ever held in my hand. I found him and he told me he had sold it to a dealer. He pointed out the dealer and told me to talk to him about it. Since I could not get the original seller down to my price I knew it would be fruitless to talk to the dealer as he had to make a profit. That said, I did talk to him. Long story short, I bought it from him for less than the original seller's bottom dollar to me. I assume the dealer, who is a class act, was a better negotiator than me.

I probably paid too much for it, but how often does one find an absolutely pristine nickel 58?

I apologize in advance for the cell phone photos. Don't have my light box set up and I am worthless when it comes to photographing nickel guns.

Years ago, when I was a kid, one of those was in the display case at a local sporting goods store. I would ride my bike by and sometimes walk in just to look around. Well, the truth is, the store was down on West Main Street, about 20 blocks out of my way home, so I guess really I rode by and walked in on purpose - to look at the revolvers.

Anyway, that gun must have sat there for at least three years. Kind of an odd duck among the K22s, K38s, Model 15s, and the rare Model 27 or Model 19 it was. The shop eventually went out of business and I suppose the nickel 58 was liquidated at that time. I wish I could remember what the price tag said... $89?? I do recall about a year after that store closed I saw my first Model 29 at a different gun shop. New Model 29s were $150 retail, which everyone thought was just absolutely outrageous! - and all the old timers were complaining about how S&W had cheapened them up. In another year or so, they were $165!

Well, enough memory lane stuff. Congrats to you on your new .41 Magnum! I hope you enjoy it.

I saw it in person at the show; very nice condition gun.
I know what he paid, and he didn't get hurt on that one.

Default That is a pretty slick find.

I got a pretty good deal on my LNIB model 58 some years ago. But it is a blue gun. I would love to have a nickeled one. Very slick indeed.

For me it started with a nickle 58 (not really a fan of nickle guns), great shooting gun. Then a 6" nickle 57 came for sale locally and I figured it would make a nice companion to the 58. Like a fool I was surfing GB one day and saw this pristine 8 3/8" nickle 57 and....

I was able to examine this nice S&W up close. It is a beauty and the lock up was tight. The rifling was sharp, I doubt this beautiful revolver saw much if any range time.

At last week's O-show a "non dealer dealer" had 2 58's in the box. One nickel and one blue. I'm not sure which was which but the prices were $1700 and $1500. Joe

Mr. Jinks said the gun shipped in September of 1977. Its in pretty good condition to be forty years old.

Bill just happens to be a bit modest. He's not cheap at all with his money or his time, trust me. But, he has scored some nice deals lately.

Now on to the gun. That's one fine 58 Bill, but now you gotta pick up some 41 mag loads.

Oh, and you need to join the M58 club.

Its actually your fault that I bought it. First, listening to you talk about how much you like the Model 58 made me want one and second, you did not go to the show and buy it before I did.

Actually, the fotos aren't too bad. I can read all the lettering. The color case looks great. The bottom of the grip in the top foto is obviously shaded. There is a bit of glare, but it just adds to the brilliant bling. If the gun actually looks as good as the pics, you've got a weiner.

I don't like to brag, but the gun actually looks much better in person than the photos show. It barely has a turn line, no flaws anywhere and the grips number to the gun. There is a bit of burnt powder under the forcing cone so I know it has been fired (more than just at the factory), but probably not very much.

It was a great find and I am lucky to be the caretaker of it for now.

Hello Bill, gun shows are dangerous. Along with club meetings, auctions,
the Forum, classifieds, the range, shooting friends, fellow collectors, etc.
Its a dangerous world out there. Best

Nice find.
I walked in my LGS and wanted a n frame in 41mag. I spotted nib m58 & m57 for $699 each both in nickel. I purchased both a week apart. I got the last ones he had.

The price is irrelevant, if you like the gun. Enjoy and the future will make the purchase look cheap.
The most important thing to me is the my version of gun beauty. If that is your version, congratulations.
I had a 57 no dash, nickel that I loved but was afraid I would mess it up in the cleaning process, therefore, I sold it. I do regret the sale because I did get a lot of satisfaction just looking at it. Again, congratulations.
