Question about Arkansas Model 66
On a Facebook S&W page, a person is showing off their Model 66, it's P&R, 4", and has an Arkansas State Police badge stamped into the sideplate. No other embellishments that I see. Is this a commemorative or was it a duty gun?

Most department marked revolvers were commemorative.Generally, these guns don't command a premium price, as nice as they can be to collect.

It could be either. My agency had two issued duty S&W revolvers rolled marked with the agency seal. The NC State Highway Patrol had revolvers and semi auto's for duty rolled marked with their badge and they also had a commemorative revolver and later semi auto, each engraved with their badge and other information.
As Old Bear said, they usually don't bring a premium unless the buyer has an association with the agency or collects police guns. The SHP 50th anniversary commemorative does have somewhat of a collector following as it was the first S&W Model 29 to be done as a commemorative and it was the first (and maybe only) gun done with acid etching.

Based on my information, the Arkansas State Police Model 66 with the badge engraved on the sideplate was NOT a commemorative gun, but was the actual issue sidearm. I don't know the exact years. Department markings that elaborate are relatively rare, and they will definitely bring a premium over a standard model, but only from the right collector, and you may well be able to find one at a "regular" price.
There was also a Model 60 issued to detectives with the identical emblem, which is particularly sought after by collectors because there weren't that many of them.

I see that the S&WSC 4th does not list a commemorative for Arkansas State Police, and I would think a commemorative might be a little fancier than just a badge with no inlay or additional engraving. I'm leaning to it being a duty gun. There is no mention of it in Model 66 variations either. I'm wondering if any of you have one or have seen them.
Thanks Absolam, You posted while I was writing this one.

It is their shoulder patch marked on the side plate. It is a duty issue weapon. Their first purchase of model 66s were not marked.
