this thread got a lot more responses that I thought it would. I wish I had more time to look but new family and work + a side job keep me busy. In the past I've found every gun I have been looking for but I've had to have patience. it seems this is no different. My plans are to put a very small " collection " 2-3 really nice working guns aside for my 2 kids. I have enough glocks and Ar's for them already. The search continues....
thanks all

One would think a state like Idaho would be over run with good Smiths. Not so, they are few and far between. The LGS's get few good examples and when they do they are priced like museum quality artifacts.
I watch the classifieds religiously and manage 2-3 good acquisitions a year.
I have bought a fair number of Smiths off the forum and have yet to experience anything but honest dealing and reasonable prices.
Be patient and keep your money handy. You have to ready to act very quickly when you find what you want at a reasonable price.

Most of my S&W revolvers are of good shooter grade. Nice, but not perfect. But I do have a few gems as well. All are the result of 40 years of constant searching and a bit of dumb luck.

"...all I find local are beat worn bags of smashed taco."
That right there is funny as heck.

Try posting in this forum's WTB Classifieds section. I have had pretty good luck there, buying and selling.
I poke around the local gunshows, the internet, gunbreaker, local online communities, a few pawn shops and gun shops, and maintain contact with local dealers who go to auctions, take in trades, etc. I'm known as the "Smith & Wesson guy" in my sphere of influence. Keep at it, you'll find what you're looking for some day, probably in a place you didn't think you would find it.

Here's a neat little pawnshop find, a 640 Centennial:
