Smile Model 629 with Bird's Eye Maple Stocks

I bought these factory stocks made of bird's eye maple about eighteen months ago and think they look great on the early Model 629. Click on the photo for a better look.

They have the small football cutout so I imagine they have black washers and are early 60s?

Beautiful and rare stocks on an equally rare pre-production 629. Nice pairing!

I agree with the Culina comment. They look really nice with that satin stainless gun. How do they feel in the hand when shooting them. Presentation grips always look like they would be slippery. Never fired a gun with a set on it. I have always pulled them off and put on finger groove pac's or such. Especially with the 44. Nice looking combo.

The stocks on the 629 are a bit thinner than would be expected and feel great in my hand. They are slicker than checkered stocks, but not actually slippery.

I agree..birdseye maple grips look perfect on a 629. Mine aren't factory...they are Keith Browns..and fit like a well worn glove. I never knew S&W did stocks in birdseye! Pretty cool, and I'm sure quite rare!

Hmmm, very nice!
Been contemplating some Birdseye stocks for a stainless revolver. I am done thinking, now it's time for buying.

If l Was asked what gun a beautiful set of Birds eye maple grips would look better on, a stainless gun or a blued gun,I would have said Blued All day long. I would have been Wrong. Those grips compliment that stainless beautifully!

I owned an early M-29 with smooth rosewood grips and had no issue with them being slippery. And smooth grips on a .44 Magnum hurt your hand less in recoil.

I am not a fan of maple, but the set shown is as good as they get. I just prefer dark rosewood, even on stainless guns. Or, colorful Goncalo alves or Cocobolo or nicely grained walnut.

I guess maple looks okay on stainless rifles. If you like that look...
