Default help with a smith & Wesson 28-2

HI. I have a Smith & Wesson model 28 - 2 highway patrolman 357mag. I'm trying to figure out if it's a fake or real brushed nickel. has a serial number N45449.IMG_5366.jpg

There were 55 Model 28-2s with a brushed nickel finish and four inch barrel shipped in 1972. There were 25 Model 28s with a high polish nickel finish and five inch barrel shipped in 1959 to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Your 28-2 was refinished outside of the S&W factory as evidenced by the polishing out of the S&W trade mark on the side plate.

Bill

That looks like a hard chrome finish to me. One very hard finish and very durable. If I was having a gun refinished it would be in hard chrome. Unless special ordered, Model 28s shipped with Magna stocks. Those appear to be Rosewood target grips, pretty nice. Whoever set that gun up, made it to be a long term shooter, carry gun for outdoors use.

Show us a pic of the cylinder and ejector. If the ejector is blued, I'd lean towards factory, if it is chromed/nickeled also, an aftermarket job.

I thought the factory nickeled guns also had case hardened hammers and triggers. The OP's looks to be nickeled/chromed.

Looks more like hard chrome to me, which is not a factory finish, but is a very durable finish.

With the hammer and trigger 'coated" I'm leaning toward aftermarket hard chrome also.................overall a nice set up for a outdoor carry gun.

Looks to me like that hammer and trigger had a little corrosion going on at one time. Just an observation.
