These grips came on a Model 36 owned by a law enforcement officer who, at some point in his and the gun's life, changed the original wood grips to these.

The grips are plastic.

The outside has a textured pattern at the lower portion and a really pretty grain pattern. Hole on outside left grip for screw to go in, right side grip has no opening.

The inside has S&W J RD. in raised capital letters with no other writing on the grips. There are two raised round tabs that fit into corresponding round recesses for a tight fit. Portion that holds the grip screw appears to be brass.

I would appreciate any educated guesses and especially absolutely certain responses ;-)

Did Rogers make round butt J-frame grips? Looks like they may have!

I've never seen those, but had a similar set made by an agent in the Dallas FBI field office. But they were real cocobolo wood with a nice grain.

He never sold to the public.

If those aren't by Rogers, I'm at a loss, but they look really good.
I hope we get a definite answer, and more photos from someone else.

No help here. I'm sure someone on the forum has come across them. The wording must stand for "Smith and Wesson "J" frame, round butt". Looks like a nice set.

Years ago I had a pair like that except they were for square butt. I believe they were made by Rogers. It is possible they are still around somewhere. If I find them I'll post a picture for comparison.

Can you print the photos a little lighter, to show detail better?

If the grain looks like Rogers, it'd help to confirm the grip maker.

How does the gun feel in the hand? Those grips look to be very comfortable.

Great idea! I changed a couple of the pics to hopefully better show the grain and grips. They feel very nice and look to be near new. This revolver was part of a deceased police officer's estate and he had many guns.

Thanks for the new photos. I'm more sure than ever that they're from Rogers. They look longer on the gun than when off.

They are either Rogers or Safariland grips. Had a pair just like them.

Here is a pic I just found from a posting about ten years ago where a fellow was answering an inquiry regarding grip brands and he posted what he said was a set of Rogers grips he had on his gun.

Based on the going prices for some of these beautiful vintage S&W revolvers you have at least figured out how to turn old steel into gold!

I'm late to the party, but I have a couple pair of those J-frame grips and a pair for a K-square frame.
Definitely Rogers. Safariland bought them out and produced the grips for a time. There were some made with a round brass-looking medallion in the right panel near the top, with either "Rogers" or "Safariland" in relief, depending on who made them. There is also a version in black matte material.

I think EPA regulations have pretty well turned lead into gold.

What a wonderful collaborative community of like interests (and some unlike) this S&W Forum fosters!

I sent an email to Bill Rogers regarding my question about the grips that came on the Model 36 I purchased.

He replied very quickly and was generous with his time, which I really appreciate. Bill was kind enough to exchange a couple of emails with me, providing information on these specific grips and his grip business in general.

I have provided below, with his permission, the details:

"Yes this is one of my grips. We made them for all of the S&W pistol models. For the J-Frame we made two models. Your model was the more concealable. The other extended down to support the little finger. The grips were called Burl Wud. The process to make the plastic look like wood is proprietary. I never patented it because I believed it was easier to protect the process by just keeping it as a secret process.

The stocks were manufactured by me from 1979 to 1985. Safariland bought my company in 1985 and discontinued the project. They have not been made since. However I sold off my inventory a few years ago and some people still sell them at gun shows."

Bill Rogers was also generous with me a couple of years ago in answering questions for another forum thread.

The Rogers grips were modified copies of the Hogue 2-piece grips made prior to the Monogrip line.
