Default S&W Model 17-3...

I just put down my deposit on a very nice vintage Model 17-3, minimal wear, 8 3/8" barrel, target grips, etc. (No pix yet, it's still in quarantine and I won't get it until sometime next month.) The serial number is 6K48573... Can anyone give me an approximate date of manufacture? It comes with the original box, too... and the price is marked $225.00! ( I paid more than that, LOL)

Thanks so much!

I think the $225 was the new (1974) price.

Yep, just like the original purchase receipt for my 1972 2.5" Python states $149.50.

We aren't that lucky!!!

I have a 17-4 from 1981. It is extremely well built and tight in all respects. Very accurate too. They just didn't do the best polishing job in it, thus leaving imperfections under the bluing. Makes an otherwise perfect gun look inferior. Just another example of quality issues being present much farther back than people realize.

Congrats on the score. Hopefully you got a nice example that will serve you well for a very long time.

Went and filled out my DROS, so now I just have to wait ten days () and then I can take this beautiful 44-year-old classic home!

Time to mail-order a bunch of .22LR ammo... while I still can.

Well done. Can't wait for the range report. I bet it is a great shooter.

Probably, but if so, that is high. I bought a brand new 17-3 in 1975 or 1976, and I paid only $137.50. Still have the receipt. I lived in Oregon at the time.

I paid $290 at Smitty's in Dallas for my 17-4 in '81 or '82. I'm sure that was full retail and maybe a little more.

I've got the 8 3/8" model 17 and dearly love it. The accuracy is outstanding. I shoot it at 100 yards plus hitting steel gongs and bells.

One of my absolute favorites.

Congrats. Yours looks to be in fabulous condition.
