Request for information
I recently purchased a model 48 no dash, six inch barrel, Serial # 5K9###. Upon cleaning and getting it ready to punch holes in targets, I tried to slip a .22 WMR into one of the chambers, no go! I tried it with the other five chambers, still no go! The point of the bullet would only enter the chamber. I slipped in a .22 long rifle round and it fit into cylinder charge holes just like my model 17, perfect fit. The breech side face of the chamber has an "M" factory marking. I looked at the cylinder recesses very carefully with a magnifying glass and see no firing pin peening or any other damage to the chambers.
Should I get this cylinder chambered .22 mag? Or look for a .22 mag cylinder to get fitted on the 48 and keep what I believe is a .22 long rifle cylinder? I have read that some of these 48s were fitted and sold with both the Mag and long rifle cylinder. These guns are worth considerable more money. I don't believe that too many came in this configiration and I think this may be one that is missing the .22 mag cylinder? I am not very good at attaching pics so I am sorry about that. Thanks in advance for any info.

You could get a letter which would state when it shipped and if it shipped with both cylinders. But the cost is $85

If you do get a letter, regardless of what it says, you still don't have a 22 mag cylinder.... and you have a model 48 which is a 22 mag. Send it to the factory for a cylinder or search for one. It will have to be fitted so the hand will work with both cylinders.

Better to get a .22 MRF cylinder for it.
Interesting it is stamped MOD 48, as the serial number is well into the 48-3 range.

I'd get the current one reamed to 22 mag.
You already have a 17 for shooting 22 LR.
I happen to have a 48 with both cylinders.
I also have 17's and the LR cylinder never gets used by me.

Allen, that threw me also, it is definately a no dash 48. "Mod 48" is centered under serial number on the crane, but its a three screw and a no dash 48 should be a 4 screw according to the book. Like you said, the serial number range is 1973, I saw that in the Supica book also. The other thing is the factory "M" marking on the breech side of the cylinder face which leads me to believe the long rifle cylinder was built for the 48 WMR. I am not interested in making money on the gun as I plan on keeping it, I just want to keep it historically accurate.

Do both cylinders on your 48 have the "M" factory marking?

Neither cylinder of mine has an M
This is the LR one.
As an aside.
I used to hear the 22 mag isn't very accurate.
I think mine is one of my most precise.
