Default Old School S&W Model Number List

This is a culmination of a list I found on the firingline forum and on other pages online. There may be a fee things that are incorrect, but I figured I'd just share it on here so if anyone wants to use the list they can. If you find anything wrong, please let me know so I can fix it on my own list. I didn't put new guns on here, except maybe a few of the stainless ones may be new. It's a little out of order, but I tried to put the stainless models after the regular models. If anyone has anything else that I could add to it let me know as well please. I didn't do the year they began or ended production.

I forgot to add round butt/square butt on almost all of these.

What an effort. The one thing that struck me was the Model 13. Before it you identified the Model 10 HB which I liked. Then in the Model 13 you mentioned just the Model 10. I was expecting to see the Model 10 HB as the prototype for the Model 13 was the Model 10-6 HB.

A true nit but if I didn't know about the Model 10 HB it could confuse me when looking at any Model 10 and wondering how they got to the Model 13.

It is a format "nit" not a accuracy "nit".

True, I can see that. I didn't even think about that one. That's why I needed input though, so thank you. I was trying with several of them to kind of explain what it looks like based on other models like the 13 does looks like a 10 but I forgot the heavy barrel part (not sure if I put that it has a heavy barrel though). Like when I said the 29 looks like an N frame 19 in 44 mag to help describe what it looks like, but also by saying a model 10 in .357 it implied that it is a 6 shot K frame as well. There were several that I referred to as a model 36 with......juat to try and give a visual idea. Example: Model 39 is a Mod 36 with a shrouded hammer, but in round butt only. That way people (I had hoped) would assume it's a 5 shot .38 J frame right off the rip and then visualize that with a shrouded hammer. Plus it saved me from having to write the frame size, number of rounds and caliber on quite a few. The model 57 & 58 were another example. Mostly to give a visual to people, but you're right I should've said it's a model 10 HB in .357. I didn't catch that. Thank you for pointing that out. I'm sure there are other things as well that I'd like to know. I just found it hard to get a decent description of many of the old school revolvers in any good detail. I only found one list that didn't give number of rounds or try to paint a picture of what they look like so I attempted to do it myself.

Okay, now that I looked at it again, I did say heavy barrel, but there is a lot of info on each gun that would've taken even longer than I already spent lol. I just wanted to describe a visual of all of them and give a few things about them. This is all the info I have had to find on my own because I wanted to learn all of these myself, so I wanted to save someone else months of digging like I spent. This list has taken some time. At least a couple months working on it here and there.

Also, I have no idea how the links got in there. I didn't put them there, it made them on its own.

I hope you didn't take my comment as a negative in any way. I was just commenting on the format. Like I said I think it is a heck of an effort.

I think the forum software keys on "key" works and creates a link.

Just a technicality but there weren't any I frames with model numbers. The J frame was in full production for all small frames before model numbers came into use.

Way cool and I respect the work it took to get it put together.

Pictures would be a lot of work also, but nice.

Great list

Model 39 was DA/SA, not DAO.

Quite an undertaking. Especially when most/many of us do not likely even have a written descriptive list of our personally owned Smiths.

No, definitely not. I wanted as much feedback as possible. I understood what you were saying. I had just read that the other day, but I just know if I started giving more detailed info like that on one, I'd end up doing it for all of them haha, it would be several more months before I finished. I appreciate feedback because I'd like to refine this list and repost it one day. Thanks again.

Ah, thank you. I used Wikipedia for some of this and it said DAO, but it isn't always right. I think when I was the Model 44 was a single action 39,i just assumed what I saw about the 39 was true. Thanks for the feedback.

Good catch! I knew that too, but I didn't even think about it at the time. This list on the firingline forum just had model numbers and they all said I/J so I wrote it down that way without even thinking about it. Good catch, thanks for the feedback. I guess in case someone wanted to know about premodels it would be helpful since I did put the model names on there too, but that wasn't how I intended it to be. I just threw the names on there for more info. I should've left the I frame off and I'm a little disappointed with myself for not catching that one lol.

The model 69 is no longer experimental number and was issued to the stainless 5 shot 44 mag on an L frame. But, I am sure you know that.

I love the list.

You show the model 38 as a shrouded version of the model 36. It is more appropriately a shrouded version of the model 37.
Great list.

Thanks! Yeah, and even though I don't like the new revolvers much from them, I do like the 69, especially if it had magna grips on it. This was just for the old system. Thanks. For the input though.

Dang, another good catch, I missed that one too. Great point, thanks for the input. I'm gonna take all the input from everyone and correct my list. Maybe repost after it's fixed up.

I appreciate everyone fixing the little things on here. My OCD wants the list to be perfect haha.

Great effort. One small thing, The model 19 is a "Combat Magnum", not a "Combat Masterpiece".

Dang it. I know that too, my autocorrect got me on that one. Thanks for letting me know, I gotta change that one. Funny thing is I own a Combat Masterpiece too, but I didn't catch that in the proofread. I appreciate everyone's input. I knew I'd have some stuff wrong, but a couple I'm embarrassed that I missed like the one about the model 38, and about the 19 and a couple others. Thanks y'all, keep the corrections coming please.

When the editing is finished, this needs to be made a sticky for the forum. It would be an invaluable assistant, especially to new users trying to figure out what grandpa's gun is....

Thank you, I appreciate you appreciating my efforts. I didn't know until this morning that I could edit it. Keep the suggestions coming. I could add the new ones in too, but I don't care for most of the new ones, and I'm sure more info is available for them anyhow. I would like to add in all the dash numbers for all of them as well, but I didn't start that yet. I'd like to add them in eventually though.

I had to look that one up. Nice addition. I saw the new one and was like hell no, but I saw the old school ones, that is nice. I'll throw that in too. I'm glad people are actually looking at this and helping me out because for so long I wanted a nice list with all these on here. I know most of them off the top of my head now, but it took quite a while to figure out. Keep the suggestions coming please.

*Note that a number of S frames with serials in the S138000-S140000 range (and the range may be wider either way) are seen that were shipped much later than the serial would suggest should be the case. In one known example a gun with serial S136431 was not shipped until June of 1958. It's possible that a large block of serial numbers that appear to be from 1954-55 were not actually used until 1957-58. It at least one case a gun has a 5-screw serial and was built as a 4-screw gun.

That is the list I used for a lot of my information actually. I got it off the firingline. There is other stuff 9n there that I didn't use, but it was not what I wanted. It leaves out visual details, doesn't tell how many rounds either. I was more interested in knowing the amount of rounds that the years it was made. That list is where I got most of the gun names from though too. I assumed T meant target, but there were a few I found that didn't have adjustable sights so I wasn't completely sure.

Especially the dash numbers were confusing. I couldn't see how that many models had the exact same dash numbers so I didn't use that. I want to add dashes into my list eventually, but I'm going to do it under each gun. Even if they do have the same features in their dashes, I want to visually display it under each one. In fact that list was my inspiration for making my own.

I know, I want to buy one, but I started making a list of the ones that I liked, and it turned into a list of all the old school ones because I wanted to learn what each one was, and by typing it all out I know most of them off the top of my head now. At that point though I figured why not post it. I never normally start a thread but I figured someone may find it useful. Especially for peoxjust getting into the old Smiths who don't know that the book exists and don't want to spend 30-50 bucks to find out about one single gun they came across or inherited. I would get a lot of use out of the book, I'd read it cover to cover, but I'm sure many people don't care enough about these old guns to buy it.

I read through the rules and didn't find an offense referenced. But as they say "open to interpretation"

One thing I don't like about the other list (and incidentally why I didn't use that list for dash numbers) is that it's not complete. The Model 10 has more than 8 dashes and the Model 15 has more than 5, the Model 60 has up to 18 dashes and the Model 36 has up to a - 10 and that doesn't even count the current one in the Classics line. I'm sure there are more but, that's just at a quick glance. It's a good list, and has some stuff mine doesn't have, but it's lacking a lot.

I think it has something to do with a friend of his being an author of something called The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson.

You might not hear from the very large gorilla type tomorrow, or a month from now, mine was up for six months, you will hear from him. Perry Mason on retainer won't do you any good. Have your answers ready and for God's sake don't argue with him. He uses few words to extract lightning from the sky and upon you.

I have since seen the light, hallelujah.

Thanks you, I missed that one completely. I thought there was a J, K and an N frame all for 22 mag, but apparently 8 was wrong. I must've got that off another list. In fact I can't even find an N frame 22 mag at all. Models 48/51/53 should all be 22 mag, 51 is a J frame, what is the 48?? Another K frame??

I copied both lists and put them into a word document - doesn't hurt to have it. And if I save it as a pdf - I can put onto my IPad

The Model 48 is a K frame chambered for the .22 Magnum Rimfire. It is essentially the same gun as the K-22 Masterpiece Model 17, but chambered for the more powerful magnum round.

The Model 51 is a J frame Kit Gun chambered for the .22 Magnum Rimfire.

The Model 53 is a K frame, but it is chambered for the .22 Jet, which is a centerfire cartridge. It also came with inserts so the .22 LR could be fired from it, giving it some versatility. But the ".22 Magnum" on the barrel is somewhat misleading. It could lead someone to believe it is intended for the .22 Magnum rimfire.

This simply is not true. Model numbers were assigned in 1957 and model marked guns started shipping in 1958. Several models were built on the I frame for two or three years before being converted to the slightly larger J frame. Here are a few examples:

.32 Hand Ejector Model 30: It got the J frame in 1961, and became the Model 30-1 at that time.

.22/32 Kit Gun Model 34: It got the J frame in 1960, and became the Model 34-1.

.22/32 Target Model 35: It got the J frame in 1960, and became the Model 35-1.

Until c. 1960, the only small frame guns built on the J frame were those chambered for the .38 Special.

And a very good book it is.

My Christmas gift to myself.
Ordered it from Bezos at 10:00AM on a Sunday and it was delivered to my door by 6:00PM. That still blows my mind.

My point with that is I'm trying to explain what they look like, also that it is a 6 shot with or without a shroud. The 57 looks like an N frame 41 mag version of a model 19. If someone knows what a 19 is, but not a 57 it'll give them an idea. Same with the 58

I know, however I made this list for people who aren't into these old guns enough to go spend 40 bucks on a book for a bunch of info they don't want or need. It's a quick reference list so people can either find out about a model they are interested in, or discover a model they never knew about without having to buy a book. I want to buy the book, but money has been so tight lately I can't even afford to spare 40 bucks for a book even though I want one really bad, I unfortunately have to wait and I'm sure there are others out there in the same boat. Besides many people post threads with just a quick question about a particular model number and thus might help answer a few questions. I'm a huge enthusiast when it comes to the old guns, but I'm willing to bet there are a ton of people out there who own a Smith or two, but could care less about buying a book on the subject.. Besides I have OCD, and this gave me something to do.
