I am looking for the age of this gun
Serial number: 78J285
In the yoke: MOD .37
On the barrel: Airweight 38 SPL CTG
I would take any other information that anyone could provide

It is from the "floating J" period, 1971-72. I don't know at what number the year crossover point was reached, so it comes from one of those two years.

I've never looked at enough ship dates to tell when the crossover took place between 1971 and 1972, so . . . I made a few assumptions, did the math and came up with 56J.

Just to remind you this is Smith&Wesson we are talking about I had a Chiefs Special s/n 963J22 that I thought was a 1972. It shipped in March 1974.

Sure. The floating J numbers were issued in '71-'72. As with all S&W revolvers, they might ship later than the year in which they were made.
