New to forum. 10-5 question please
Greetings all.
I recently purchased a mod 10-5, 4 inch barrel. Has 3 screws (assuming the 3rd one is under the grips), pinned barrel, fixed sights. Number on the butt of the gun is C788709.
Stamped on the barrel, right side, says 38 S&W Special CTG
Some folks on another site, say I can fire 38 Special ammo out if it. I'm hesitant about this. I also own a 642 2" that I bought brand new last spring and of course it's a .38 special.
I placed a dummy .38sp round in the wheel, fits fine. Placed a round that I reloaded (no primer) in and it fits as well, does not show out the end at all.
So, to clear up my mind. Will this fire 38 special ammo or not? Also, what year is this revolver?
Hope I gave enough info.
Thank you.

Yes you can fire .38 Special. In fact that is what the barrel stamp is telling you; 38 S&W Special CTG.
Your serial number makes it about 1963 to 1965.
The closest I have to yours is one that shipped in 1967.

It will shoot those 38 specials and will shoot them well! Enjoy it. I have a couple 10-5's
I understand your hesitation because of the 38 S&W cartridge and the 38 S&W Special. The round on the left is the 38 S&W and the right is the 38 Special. Big difference.

Here are my 2 "wheel" guns, including the newest member of the family, the 10-5.

That is a nice pair. My wife's carry gun is the 638-3. Similar to your snubby.

Some nice revolvers. I think you'll find the 10-5 shoots a lot "friendlier" than the 642. Trigger likely smoother too!

You will enjoy your 10-5. I purchased a used one about three years ago. Police issue; carried much/shot little.
Of all my K frames and N frames, it possesses the smoooothest trigger. I shot mine this morning. No problem holding all shots within an eight inch circle at 25 yards.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! The Model 10 is S&W's bread and butter gun that has been around since 1899. Known as the .38 Military & Police Revolver, it was the mainstay of those institutions for over a hundred years. The .38 S&W Special cartridge is a very versatile round that can be configured in numerous ways and velocities. The Model 10 can shoot any of the cartridges on the market in any pressure.

I used to have a half-dozen or so Model 10's. Which is funny because at one time when I was a teen-age know it all, I would have told you they were just plain junk. Who wanted something with that skinny barrel, those goofy grips, and in 38 Special? Would that even kill a rabbit?
I got a little smarter as I got older. I've reduced my inventory these days, but one of the ones I kept, is a 10-5 with a BK grip adapter.
