Default S&W 28-2 Highway Patrolman mixup

I bought a HP and when I was checking the actual model it shows a 28-2 but there's a 7 stamped on the number 8. I don't know if this was an error made by S&W or the previous owners stamped a 7 over the 8? I am confused. Are there some that have the same issue?

Oddly it was an error made more times than one would think. Does not change value. Seen a fair amount of pictures where they put wrong model number and it remained on gun. As they say S&W did not let anything go to waste so mismark ed or not out it went.

Very interesting! I've seen some re-stamp guns advertised on auction sites, as a sort of unique or rarity.

Yes, revolvers did leave the factory that were mismarked. The rule of thumb with older S&W's is that anything is possible. Yes, it's possible that it could have happened after it left the factory. Do they command a premium? Perhaps only to the seller....... There are a couple of ways to go. Starting with the least expensive, remove the stocks or otherwise(sales receipt) find the serial niumber and check it in the SWSC 4th edition. The second thing is to request and pay the fee for what is commonly referred to as a factory letter. That will give you what model the gun was listed as when left the factory, the ship date, where or to whom it was shipped and the configuration of the gun when it was shipped. hope this helps, hardcase60

This shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Is the barrel 3-1/2" or 4"? Does it say "Highway Patrolman" on the right side of the barrel? Is the top strap checkered? The pictures won't enlarge on my phone, so I can't tell if these questions are already answered.

Well, unless the barrel has a different serial number, I think we have our answer.

It's a late '66 - early '67 gun. Barrel marked as a Highway Patrolman. Don't see any checkering on the top strap. Far as I'm concerned, the "7" stamp doesn't make it any more valuable or really mean anything. Just another 28-2 that someone's stuck rubber grips on...which definitely decreases its value.

With the higher gloss finish and the large gap at the upper part of the sideplate and lower sideplate seam near the trigger I'm thinking it has an old refinish. But it'll still make a fine shooter.

Question

The barrel is clearly Highway Patrolman; does it measure 4" from cylinder face to muzzle? Is it possible you have a Model 27 with an HP barrel put on by a gunsmith? Is the top strap checkered?

I was looking at a Mod 14-3 at my LGS "several" years ago, and when I opened it it was clearly an overstamp of a Mod 16 frame. Just as clear as a bell. This would have been in the late 80's or early 90's.

The factory finish does vary a lot on M28s. From the very basic "who gives a damn" brush blue to a very nice deep blue that can rival the finish on an M27.

I agree. I once had a M28 rechambered to .44 Special and the factory .44 barrel that was swapped on matched the M28 finish.
