Gun show 10-6
I went to a gun show today. One dealer had 6, 10-6's. Two of them had boxes with them. These guns had not been taken care of for a while. One thing I didn't understand. some of them did not have a serial number under the barrel. One of them had a serial number under the barrel but the last three digits matched the grip but the rest of the numbers did not. What am I looking at. The guns had a little light rust but looks like they would clean up. He wanted 299.00 for each one. Offered to me at 280.00 out the door.

No Model 10-6 should have a serial number on the barrel flat. But maybe you mean "under the cylinder" - that is, in the yoke cut???

Thanks Jack. Actually only one had a number under flat part of the barrel. So 5 out of six were correct. One did have a number under the barrel flat but the number was not exactly right. The last three digits were the same as the last three digits of the serial number on the butt of the gun.
I sent the dealer an email last night. I asked him again where the guns came from. He said the NC Police academy. It looks like they have been lying around unused for a while.

Most likely dept numbers added to the guns after receipt. The only serial number on a 10-6 should be on the bottom of the grip frame. $280 sounds like an excellent price. I would've picked up a couple at that price!

Yeah. Sounds like that is not a factory stamp.

I may call him and offer 250.00.
The one even had the correct box.

If the guns are in good working order, that is a good price. Many dealers will at least guarantee that the gun will shoot.

I guess I have a lot of old outdated rusty junk in my safe then.
With all of those dinosaurs I own it just goes to show what I know about handguns.

I've got a 10-6 due into the gun shop tomorrow. Geesh, out of date before I even get to hold it.

That's the iPhone generation for ya. Before I can even save a couple hundred to get a fancy smart phone they come out with some new $1000 version. I give up

Well, I don't know what to tell you - except: YOU'RE WRONG
We have FIVE of them - one in every bedroom. You can't beat a S&W revolver for bedroom gun! No safeties, no feeding problems, no jams to clear, great trigger, they can be loaded with everything from 125 gr target to 148 gr wadcutters to 158 gr +P. What is not to like??

Hello forum;
Out of date? Huh?
My 10-5 seems to be perfect when my open carry ensemble cries out for quintessential "modern" revolver, classic, in the right leather, looks can't be beat. Accuracy the best there is, simplicity of operation from the "draw", "threat" "fire" mode to plinking paper at leisure.
Yea............I am 72, but my bell bottom polyester slacks, white belt and white shoes left for Goodwill long, long ago......my Model 10-5?............No way!!! And I am happy to accommodate any one wanting to step up to the line with their "in-date, whammo-mammo, black plastic rig" and touch off a few rounds at 50 feet or so......I'll even spot them a couple magazines worth....I know where my 6 will land.

280$ is a good price, 250$ if buying 2, MAYBE. Not worth missing out on it for 30$ IMO. Guessing whoever thinks their time is gone never shot one. "A valid point", yeah on the top of your head.

Nope. I was watching that auction. I don't remember if I made a bid or not but wish I had. You got it for lower than I thought it would have gone. I grew up right near that Gunshop. One of the few left in the NY area. About 5 miles outside of NYC. Bet you it was an NYPD gun. Let us know how it looks and shoots. I am kicking myself for not bidding on it. How much higher were you willing to go?
And as for the poster who said revolvers with wear are like buying typewriters that need repair, that is probably the dumbest thing I have ever heard or read on the internet. My revolvers and M1 Garands are right at home in the safe next to my plastic semi autos and AR's. And they're all just as capable of hitting a target and doing their job.

I will thanks. I was going until $250. Surprised I got it. I just picked it up but haven't cleaned it up yet. Looks pretty good and I am sure it was a police weapon; lots of holster wear on the cylinder (all flutes) and barrel. It is very tight; hardly looks shot at all. The gun store gunsmith said it was very tight as well. Smooth action. I think it is going to be a good one.

cmansgums, I've got you beat! I don't have a Model 10, but I wore with my white belt and shoes, a pastel blue polyester Leisure Suit with a wide collared white shirt with a floral pattern in dark blues! I was a concealed carrying Model 36 chick magnet!!

Around here if you want old, rusty and ugly we have plenty of that.
And if you want the latest and so-called greatest, we have some of that too. You can take your pick but they all shoot good.

Got it home and cleaned up. Period correct stocks on it now. Nice and tight and lots of holster wear. Range report by the weekend.

I get the point you're making, and I'm not saying that you're wrong.
You would really HATE my 10-6 4".
I call her Ugly Betty. She looks about as good as a monkey's butt but shoots like a target gun.
She always works, shoots straight, and has a great action.
Given the rust inside the muzzle (where the PO committed suicide) I'm shocked at how well she shoots.
I'm a bit of a sucker for a great gun with finish issues at a giveaway price. (Seems nobody wants a gun that someone pulled a Budd Dwyer with)
The PO could always buy a Glock or a Shield, but then he'd have to settle for that trigger pull.
K and L frames will spoil you. They also reproduce like rats. I started with one. Now, I need to go to addiction meetings because of them.

Started with one? Then how do they reproduce? I was smart. I just bought two 10-5's at once 2" and 4". Have to populate the safe somehow.

Fast shooting, great trigger, great accuracy, and DRT never go out of style.
Your 10-6 is my 10-6's pretty cousin.
Mine's ugly, but she puts out steadily.

I looked real hard at one at the gun show yesterday. Some holster wear, and a hang tag rice of $325. I talked myself out of it because I already have a 13-1 in about the same shape. The fact that the gun fund is all tapped out may have had something to do with it too...
